Car seat help please!

I have the graco snugride 35 lite LX and I’m struggling with my baby’s head slumping over and I’m scared he’s going to asphyxiate. Everyone who has looked at the level says it’s right and I just removed the body support because it said it was only for 12lbs and under and he’s 13lbs now. I’m not sure what else to do.

Have you tried the car seat advice group on FB? They are really good x

Avatar

Go onto the Facebook car seat safety page, it’s really useful! I wouldn’t want to give you incorrect advice but I wouldn’t travel without asking them and gaining advice with the positioning of your little ones head x

Avatar

Looks like he needs the body / head support and definitely shoulder pads on the straps

Avatar

Thank you! I will try out the Facebook car seat safety page. My car seat didn’t come with shoulder pads on the straps and I read it was dangerous to add them.

Avatar

My boys head done this too and I put the insert back in and seems to improve his head position but still slumps abit! X

Avatar

Try rolling up receiving blankets and tuck them on either side. I have the same carseat. The exact same thing happened to me. The receiving blankets on the sides worked. I put 2 blankets on top of each other then rolled it

Avatar

It’s not safe to add anything in the car seat

Avatar

The fb group is great, your little one definitely needs all inserts back in, shoulder and crotch pads on. Despite the seat being recommended for newborns, most seats are not suitable or get a good fit until about 6 months. He maybe a little too small for it at the moment. Chin to chest at his age can be dangerous unfortunately xx

Avatar

You can get baby neck support pillows. Like a mini version of what adults use on planes.

Avatar

I kept the insert that came with the seat in until he was big enough to not need it. Even though it said take out at 14 pounds. He was still too small for it to leave, he was also a preemie

Avatar

There is a Facebook group called Car Seat Safety that is great for this! Car seat safety technicians are the best source for answers!

Avatar

yes, my baby’s great grandma got her shoulder pads and the doctors told us we can’t put them on because they were unsafe to use.

Avatar

they say not to use neck support pillows, it’s safer to take burp cloths or something and put it next to baby’s head but nothing should go behind the baby’s neck/head

Avatar

We had the same car seat and ended up getting the maxi cosi. With the maxi cosi his head still slumped over but not as much. Find a temporary solution until he gains head control. Use the insert

Avatar

Ok, sorry, in Australia we have ones especially for babies in vehicles. Must be different where you guys are.

Avatar

Definitely don't add anything that wasn't made for this carseat to it. There's a lot of poor advice on here!

Avatar

My baby has always sat like that in his car seat even now and he’s 10 months! It’s so scary but you can’t add anything in his car seat. Put the inserts back in for a little while. I left mine in longer to help a bit. It’s hard I stopped a lot to check on him and tried not to go anywhere I didn’t have to. After a few months I realized that’s how he’s comfortable when he sleeps and it didn’t scare me anymore. Good luck mama you got this.

Avatar

Car seat accessories are super unsafe. Please do more research on this. Babies are better off slumped than propped. Car seats were designed to be safe so you don't need to add anything. If you feel anxious just try going shorter distances if possible.

Avatar

I used to keep my daughter awake if it was just me in the car to avoid this (we have the same car seat) or I would ride in the back if my husband drove to keep an eye out. I agree with the other mommas who have said to not add anything that did not come with the car seat. My best advice is to try and keep your little one awake while in the car seat.

Avatar

I usually ride in the back with him, but his 4 month appointment is coming up and it’s almost a 30 minute drive and I’m going to have to take him alone. The short distances we’ve drove alone I tried to sing loud to keep him up, and I even put my hand back and touched his head and I still couldn’t keep him awake. Lol

Avatar

definitely join the fb group, lots of unsafe advice on here. They are super knowledgeable and you’ll get immediate help x

Avatar

please don’t listen to the advice on here! there’s a lot of unsafe advice. join the FB group, they will help you 🥰

Avatar

these are super super super unsafe and have caused deaths when they slip down and suffocate the baby. Please stop using it - you shouldn’t use anything in a car seat unless it was specifically made by the seat manufacturer.

Avatar

I’m in Australia and have never come across a neck pillow for a car seat. Anything that doesn’t come with the seat or is made by the seat manufacturer shouldn’t be used.

Avatar

they don’t slip down. I have something that it attaches to. And I just place it on his forehead and i keep an eye on him with the mirror. I can’t have his head flop over he already has a hard time breathing

Avatar

also I only put it on when he’s already asleep. But other than that he’s free

Avatar

So head to chin is dangerous… it’s actually okay for the head to be this way according to every doctor I’ve ever asked.. just use a burp clothes, tiny blanket, something not fluffy.

Avatar

you can’t know how it will behave in an accident as it hasn’t been crash tested. If he’s getting head flop you need to figure out why and adjust the seat accordingly, not add untested accessories.

Avatar

I joined the Facebook group and I was told that it was okay for him to be like that but I could recline the seat a little more and it would still be level

Avatar

He looks really unsupported. His head should not be able to slump around to the side like that... id highly recommend joining a Facebook group. You can post the image and ask for a fit check. I've used it a few times and it's been so helpful. I'll send an image of the group for you...

Avatar

I joined the US group since I’m not in the UK but people who were CPST certified said that it was correct and I posted the level as well. They told me not to add any kind of support but that I could adjust the incline on the base a little more

Avatar

the car seat it self came with thinner padding around the head bottom and back. I normally ride in the back with him when my husband drives unfortunately I don’t have the luxury of always driving with him and I work 1 hour away from our home as I’m a nurse and the closest hospital it an hour away with traffic my parents who watch him are also 45 minutes away I made sure the attachment I got was made by the same company as the car seat. My cousin had a son a couple months before mine and he will be 1 next month he’s had issues in his neck as they removed all the attachments that came in the car seat from the beginning. I AM NOT TELLING ANYONE HOW TO RIASE OR TREAT THEIR CHILD. I am just saying what I did and what my family has done in the past. All my siblings had padding in their seats as well and my mother asked the doctors before adding anything to my brother’s seat. THIS IS YOUR DECISION HUN. You choose how you best feel helps your baby.

Avatar

The issue with adding padding is it can compress however the ones I got my son only had the cushion around his head and it follows the lining of the car seat no extra padding behind his back bottom or anywhere else it could possibly cause harm to him if there was to be an impact. You do what you feel is best and do not let anyone guilt trip you about how you choose to keep your child safe. Not everyone will always agree with you. Trust me as long as your child is happy and healthy you do what you feel needs to be done.

Avatar

Hey mama nothing added to the car seat is safe but what is 100% safe is rolling receiving blankets and place on each side of the head !

Avatar

that’s not safe tho mama anything added to the carseat isn’t safe because if your child gets in an accident when the insurance claim goes through your child’s health insurance doesn’t need to pay for anything for your child and your insurance will not replace the carseat because using that puts your child in danger it was not crash tested with the car seat

Avatar

I only removed the padding yesterday because his head was slumping and when I read the manual it said to be removed. His head slumps like that either way though, so taking it out didn’t help at all. But thank you so much!

Avatar

your correct mama but there is alternatives you can roll receiving blankets and put to the sides of the babies head and it’s cpst approved because it’s no different than covering your little one with a blanket and nothing is being added to the car seat

Avatar

I’m going to try the receiving blankets!

Avatar

you could try leaning the seat back a bit my son leaned more to the side so the padding I got was fine he doesn’t need it now as he sleeps with his head back now that’s he’s older.

Avatar

There are some padding that is tested if the brand has different size adjustment they will have different size padding you can add that’s been tested my car seat had three stages for when it got outgrown. I have the Clerk car seat and all added accessories are tested .

Avatar

my accessories have been tested by the brand prior to use. Clerk car seats

Avatar

the manual and website both say any accessories have been tested and are safe to use for you little one. It says to read assembly instructions throughly before adding anything padding or switching sizes. I did my research and used the same car seat brand my mother and aunt used with their last child

Avatar

I don’t add anything that was not made by the same manufacturer or used for that specific car seat.

Avatar

This mom was asking for help not your judgement and neither was anyone else yelling at someone and making them feel stupid is not the base way to handle this

Avatar

I had a preemie and literally during my son's car seat test. They rolled a receiving blanket to keep his head up. I had a car seat certified tech install my car seat and they also said to use a receiving blanket.

Also this group is for first time moms. I didn't know when I had my first daughter. That the headrest for babies wasn't allowed. It was all new to me. Don't have to be a bitch about it. And judge these.moms when they don't know. Be nice

Avatar

not supporting your hateful ass at all. I also used car seat inserts because I didn't know they weren't allowed. This girl is for first time moms. Stop acting like a no it all and offer support. You are judging and being rude to these mothers who are already struggling it's not right.

Avatar

I never suggested she purchase anything @deb I stated what I use because my car seat manufacturer and manual say it’s okay as those products are tested. I will never tell anyone what to do or how to raise their kids I’m stating what I have done to simply show them not everyone does the same thing you are here being rude and disrespectful when we’re sharing our process. No one told her go buy this go do that. Everyone suggested and shared but you. You came in saying throw it out don’t do this don’t do that your killing babies you’re going to decapitate them. We gave our stories is all.

Should I be concerned or am I overthinking?

My little boy is 15 months old, he’s recently taken his first steps and he says mamma and dadda and baba (he has said these for months) we’ve filled out the paperwork for his 12-14 month review and it looks like he isn’t meeting many of his milestones.

He doesn’t copy actions, point, clap etc. He doesn’t react when being spoken to, or to his name. He actively avoids eye contact.

He was so unresponsive to sound that we just had his hearing tested concerned he was deaf. They found that he could hear so he is just choosing not to react to any noises or sounds.

Has anyone else had similar experiences with their little ones? Should I be raising this with the health visitor and ask to be assessed for neurodivergent issue or a social communication problem like autism?

I don’t want to just slap a label on him, but I do feel that there are real concerns. All opinions welcome!!

Does anyone else’s baby spit up breastmilk but not formula?

I’m seriously considering seeing a lactation consultant because I don’t understand why he can’t hold down breastmilk but can formula. I use soy formula since I’ve used it with my daughter and I’m thinking it might be due to not getting milk coming in for a few days so I had no choice but to give him formula, but now even if I take breaks in between feeding him breastmilk to burp or try to mix breastmilk and formula, he spits it up sooo much. I’m ready to just give him just formula because I’m worried about him not eating enough

I think Motherhood has made me more bitter than I realized…

This is such a ramble but I don’t know where else to put it all.

I’m four months in and I don’t really have hobbies right now. I don’t do anything for myself except maybe doomscrolling or listening to a podcast while I breastfeed my baby. I used to craft and have game nights with friends. Activities that usually are at least 2 hour stretches. Now if I have an hour free my mind immediately goes to baby, or doing something in the house for baby.

And I thought I didn’t mind. Like I knew postpartum could be very mentally consuming. But I think it’s altering how I view people around me and it’s prodding at my relationship with my husband.

He spends most of his time making food for us, looking after our dogs, playing with the baby, ect. But he still has time for his hobby. Spends maybe an hour a night on it. Even adapted to using a bot for shopping for his hobby after a certain incident where we had to have a heart to heart after he left me home alone with the baby for hours during a busy workday (I work from home) to shop for his hobby.

And yet there’s like this little green eyed monster in me that rages every time I know he’s running off to start up the bot. Even though I’m the reason he does it this way.

We took a family trip last weekend to see his best friend and their kids and let them meet the baby. He brought the laptop. He’s always brought a laptop on trips and it’s never been a problem to me before. But one night we both woke up while the baby was still asleep, and he wandered out of the room. I tried to fall back asleep but couldn’t. So I went to the kitchen to try having something warm to drink to settle me. And he was there at the table running the bot from his laptop. I flipped out at him. But there really wasn’t reason to. It’s not like I needed help with the baby and he was ignoring me. He wasn’t avoiding our friends. He was just awake and unable to sleep and found something to do with his time. Yet my snap reaction was “why the hell would you do this on a family trip?”

I don’t know what it is. Maybe it’s the less complete sleep from baby’s middle of the night feed? My brain being just consumed by baby? Maybe I’m not as over that shopping incident as I thought? But I’m just so annoyed at his hobby right now. The green eyed monster thinks “you could be using that time differently” but realistically to do what exactly??? Stare at our baby in the dark???

I spent probably an hour apologizing to him after I snapped. And he’s of course hurt and frustrated because I said some very mean things in the moment.

I don’t want to be this jealous, angry person. But I also don’t know how to find time for myself in this right now outside of basic hygiene. It’s like I’ve forgotten how to be myself, even if just for an hour.

Maybe I need a therapist.
