I finally got around to looking at my hospital bills 9 months post partum. A bunch have been sent to collections and it's so expensive even after insurance. Have to submit claims for things that may not be covered now since it has been over a year since the services were rendered. It was so overwhelming to sort out with a small baby (I hate doing stuff like that even before the baby). I just feel like a failure as an adult and w failure as a mom. The bills just sit there taunting me and I finally go to handle them and get hit with a shit show that's my own fault for delaying them so much. 😔 How will I handle all the logistics of taking care of my baby...? Ugh. I'm not good at anything. Not a good homemaker, not very organized/clean, can't manage paperwork...I just suck.

Just do it bit by bit! Same with any chores, just divide the big chores into 2-3 and do it like that, couple of minutes at a time, you can do it!! Everyone is good at something and we can always learn and improve ourselves !! Sending you love!!

Take it easy, everyone makes mistakes, everyone has things they are not good at. If it is hard to take care of a little baby that means at least you're a caring mother, which is A LOT more important than organization and paper work, even if that means you screwed up financially, we all do from time to time.

Are you eligible for free healthcare? I pay rent & bills and am fully self reliant on myself so we both have free healthcare. I'm unsure how you have hospital bills because if it was labor then you left the next day there shouldn't be a bill. There is a bill I think when you stay past 2 days but I'm just worried they are forcing you to pay when you don't need to. I had Harvard Pilgrim before state, but my mom dropped me finally lmao i wasn't paying for my health insurance/ definitely can't afford it. You are just fine. If you do "have" to pay it, let it go. That's unfair. Period. You gave birth. 6-7 years from now it'll go away if you don't answer calls.

For reference I had 30K in debt bc I have Endometriosis. At 23 years old they finally discovered that & tried calling me constantly to pay the outstanding balance for medical debt prior to my diagnosis. I didn't answer. So I think 18-22 that's how much accumulated from needing ER for blacking out at work etc. almost bleeding out & needing meds etc through IV lol. It was on my spine, heart, lungs, my bowels were twisted completely like a boa constructor. Anywho 22-27 I used to get calls from collections. & I never picked up the phone. My credit went back to 0 no impact by 28 years old. I got a used vehicle 2011 Nissan Sentra 100K miles. I'll pay that from June 2023- November 2024 when they have half off trade ins any year for pre owned, my credit is at 630 right now. Don't let medical debt dictate your life.
You don't deserve that.

Ask the hospital for itemized bill because a lot of the time they bill for things they didn’t even do or give . It should reduce your bill by a lot & go from there

After a near death motor vehicle accident, I woke up in the hospital at barely 19 years old with severe injuries. Traumatic brain injury, short term memory loss, my right hand was almost amputated but they did incredible work to reattach the tendons, bones, and ligaments. I had multiple surgeries to my right hand, facial reconstructive surgery, outpatient therapy, occupational therapy, neuro therapy, ambulance bills…
Just one of my ambulance bills was over $60K after insurance.
The person driving had no insurance and threatened to file bankruptcy and leave me with the lawyer bills for additional debt if I tried to sue.
I was in so much debt, had severe medical issues, and was barely out of HS, so getting a high paying job was not an option.
It took quite a while, but I was able to eventually settle those debts with collectors by doing a few things:

Collectors, especially for medical, do negotiate to help you settle for much less.
Call each and see if they will offer you a lower price and pay each that you can.
I also used a company that bought all the debt, and had me pay them regularly every month until it was paid off. It made it illegal for collections companies to contact me any longer.
Over a decade later, a friend told me about her depression over debt so I was able to help and we stayed up all night going through her bills and making a plan. She used the same company and we were both able to get completely out of debt in about a year or so after starting.
It’s been a while since then, but I could probably get the name of that company if you would like it.
It definitely helps to only have to remember to make one, reasonably affordable payment a month rather than multiple.
Let me know if you’d like me to ask for it.
You’ve got this. Good luck! 💚

This does not make you a bad mom. See if you can meet with someone from hospital billing to discuss the amount and see if they can lower it, then establish a monthly payment plan.

Did you try to apply for financial aid through the hospital?
