Glucose tolerance test really necessary?

Hey all, looking for advice. I failed my glucose screening test with a 145. They want me to take the 3 hour GTT but I’m considering declining. I eat pretty healthy and exercise regularly. No family history of diabetes. Im not good with fasting and blood draws, have to take a whole day off work to do this, and really don’t want to drink that drink again 😝
Advice please!!!

Yes it def is necessary. My aunt gets GD when she gets pregnant and she lost her baby in her second pregnancy because her sugar got too high. She was eating healthy too.

you eating “pretty” healthy and exercising regularly isn’t helping if you failed the first test. since you failed
the first test i feel like the second one is even more necessary

Avatar

Absolutely necessary. I get checked for diabetes fairly regularly because of family history and my A1C and blood sugars are always perfect and I still had it with my daughter and struggled with it to the point I almost needed meds or insulin. It absolutely can be managed with diet and exercise. It’s not fun, but my little girl came out happy and healthy❤️

Even if you don’t have a family history of diabetes it can still happen in pregnancy. I failed my first hour with my son and I had to do the three hour. It sucks yes, but it’s for the sake of making sure baby is healthy. It’s also to make sure you stay healthy too. Definitely don’t decline taking the 3 hour. My recommendation for it is making sure to drink water during the process in case of nausea, packing plenty of snacks for after the test since you are required to fast for at least 12 hours, and you’ll be hungry. Lastly don’t hesitate to ask if you can lay down it’ll help if you can. I had to do the 3 hour GTT twice with my son since the first time I went awry and I was sent home. The second time it went better. I don’t even remember it.

I would do it, only because you failed the screening. But if you really don’t want to, just assume you’re diabetic, buy the glucose meter and check your numbers as recommended by your doctor. That way you can avoid the drink and the test. I would definitely share those numbers with your dr to make sure you’re on track. The drink is so awful!

If you failed I’d say it’s necessary. Diabetes during pregnancy rarely has anything to do with diet and exercise or genetics. It’s all about hormone levels changing. It can become very dangerous if it’s left untreated, I’d just bite the bullet and get it over with.

Avatar

Gestational diabetes has really nothing to do with diet an exercise. Its about your hormone level and how your placenta filters sugars. I took the first screening and passed but later found out I had a false positive. We almost lost our little one during labor. Because I went undiagnosed for so long and was not managing my sugars. If I could do it over again I would have just gotten the 3 hour test from the start.

Avatar

You can ask for an alternative to the drink offered. They let me bring in grape juice.

Avatar

If you don’t take the test, you should test your blood with a finger sticker and hour after meals for two weeks to rule out GD. It’s super common for people with zero risk factors to develop it. You don’t have to have any diabetes in the family and you can eat super healthy and still develop GD.

Avatar

In the UK you can ask to check your blood sugars 4 times a day for a week instead of having a GTT. Not sure if it's the same in the US but worth asking. What is definitely NOT worth doing is assuming you don't have GDM as it can cause serious problems for both you and baby if left undiagnosed.

Avatar

I would take it, like all others have said, things could be worse. Better worse than sorry. I was actually so upset when I didn’t pass the first test, because I was so close to passing, it was borderline. I cried about it, but still did the 3 hour and also the finger pricks till the end. Def not fun, and the drink is horrible, but it’s part of knowing our babies are healthy. I’m 6 months postpartum now and if anyone mentions the glucose drink, I feel like throwing up, I can actually taste it as if I drinking it now.
Good luck to you!

Due to hormones some expecting mothers body's can't process sugar like it normally would causing gestational diabetes has nothing to do with diet and exercise. I'm 29 weeks with gd eat healthy exercise and only weigh 115 lbs never had gd with my daughter but hormones are different with my son

Try buying the fresh test instead and take with you on your next

Please.. I’m so genuinely begging.. do the test.

If you do have gestational diabetes (which can absolutely happen with no family history. It’s all about your placenta.) you can literally lose your baby from having it uncontrolled. Like we’re talking still birth… the trauma from a stillbirth is something I could not even fathom… PLEASE get the test done. I know it’s not fun. It’s not meant to be.. but it’s SO IMPORTANT.

You’re also at risk of other things with GD too so your OBGYN needs to be prepared for those things when you go in for delivery.. babys sugars may need support in the immediate postpartum period. That’s not something you want to come as a surprise..

It’s definitely necessary to do the test but every body is different. My mum was over 300lbs , diabetic , and smoked everyday during all of her pregnancies but me and all of my sisters were fine. There are many complications it can cause however having diabetes doesn’t mean your baby will die. It means you won’t be able to carry to full term. Your baby could possibly get too big or won’t be able to regulate their own blood sugar at birth. As pregnancy progresses , you will also find that your glucose sugar will also increase. It’s not just about thinking how high your sugars are , but how fast it can drop! If you didn’t eat all day, you could possibly slip into a coma.

Avatar

The drinks just like a stale Fanta it’s not that bad at all I don’t think. May as well just go and get it over with it’s the right thing to do. Work will always be there, your health on the other hand… I had it myself in pregnancy just got to do the right thing for you and baby. Wishing you all the best

Avatar

You are allowed to refuse. I did.

Avatar

I declined mine. I have no history of GD! I’m due next month btw with my 2nd daughter. If you feel u don’t need it they can’t force you to do any test ! Your in control

Avatar

My doctor gave me the option of monitoring my levels from home with a glucometer, it was not necessary to go to the laboratory and drink that but I did have to take a small blood sample from my finger every day for a couple of weeks. I feel like it was easier for me though. Ask your doctor what options you have

Avatar

You absolutely need to. It can cause serious health risk to baby if you are…

Pregnancy diabetes anyone can get and you are supposed to get type 2 tested afterwards every 2 years. It also can effect your childs future with diabetes. You'll have to not just eat health but carb count with every meal and eat certain things 3 meals and snacks. 30 carbs with meals and 15 with snacks. They will also send you to a diatician and you have to keep a food diary. My friend knew she had it and didn't get on medicine as hers was pretty bad and she felt awful. I didn't need meds but all I could have before bed was a glass of milk or my numbers would be crazy high in the morning. You have to prick your finger and upload results which sucked the most but it is what it is. Better to monitor than have an emergency C section or have you get more sick

Avatar

Gestational diabetes is something I wouldn’t mess with. You could be the healthiest person on earth and still get it and it affects the baby and their development more than it affects you. Take the day and do the test is my advice.

Avatar

I failed my first test with my last pregnancy and declined the second. You barely failed. My midwives gave the option of me testing and recording my blood sugar for 1 week at home instead. You’re pricking yourself more, but I had the same reservations as you of not wanting to drink that again and having to take a whole day off work. Testing at home was much better for me.

Very helpful, thank you everyone 🫶🏼

Try the fresh test! I had to do both tests (passed the second fortunately) and I had no qualms about drinking the 3hr fresh test because it tastes so good. Like minty lemonade and not even too terribly sweet. Like if I was served that in a restaurant I would have been satisfied.

Avatar

I’ve never even heard of this test 🤔 -uk mum. I had bloods and urine tests regularly but never glucose screening x

Avatar

I failed mine by 1 point and didn't take the 3 hour, baby was born 2 weeks early but perfectly fine

Avatar

As some have suggested, ask them about monitoring your sugar levels instead.

I am the type to absolutely do anything and everything that can help with a healthy pregnancy/baby... no matter if it's uncomfortable or inconvenient. I also had no family history or risk factors (besides advanced maternal age)... low BMI... and healthy/active for the most part. We go straight to 3 hour test here, and I passed the GD test at 27 weeks... but had several ultrasounds and baby jumped in % between 28 and 32 weeks, so did the test again... and failed the 1hr blood draw. I would have never suspected that. So this pregnancy I did it at 15.5wks (passed) and do it again in a week at 26 weeks. You are followed up after birth for your own health and there are some increased risks as you get older. But good to do what to can to help baby. The finger prick helped me know what was elevating numbers and walking after meals. Good luck!

Avatar

I had GD and went into preterm labor because I developed Diabetic Keto Acidosis. Luckily I was monitoring my sugars because I knew about the GD… I’d take the test.

So if you’re in the USA, you should be aware the regular test using glucola has ingredients OUTLAWED in most of Europe, Japan, India, Australia, etc. for REGULAR people, let alone pregnant people. I opted to just test my blood sugars for two weeks. If your doctor offers an alternative to glucola, I’d go for that. Mine did not.

8 week immunisations

My 8 week old has his first set of injections tomorrow and I’m abit nervous. Does anyone have any advice for after the jabs? I know they get a temp after so have got some calpol to give just before hand. Should I put him to bed in less clothing to make sure he doesn’t get too hot? Any tips from your experience with first set of immunisations? Am I worrying more than I need to? 😅

Of these two, which seems more overall “demanding” to you, overall? Lighthearted poll, not putting anyone down 🫶🏼

As a mum who breastfed for 3 years, I think formula feeding seems 100x harder and more demanding. I give those mamas all the credit because I could not keep up with that faff haha. I truly don’t understand why people say breastfeeding is more effort, other than the fact that no one else can do it. But personally I’d take that over endless bottle prep & cleaning.

Signs of Neurodivergent Toddler

Any moms of neurodivergent toddlers who could help me out? My son is 13 months old. I know that is technically too early for a diagnosis, but I have a gut feeling that he is on the autism spectrum.

The main sign he shows is hand leading. He does not point at all, and instead will take my hand and lead me anywhere he wants to go,
getting very frustrated if I do not follow.

He is also extremely sensitive to being touched, especially when it comes to hats and putting clothes on. He won’t let anything touch his head or face and I have to fight him to brush his teeth, comb his hair, etc.

He’s very interested in things that aren’t toys and will repeat the same behavior over and over. He can go in and out of doors or walk up and down stairs for hours. He loves taking things out of containers and putting the back in repeatedly.

We recently took him on his first vacation and he REALLY struggled with the change. He struggles with any type of transition or change in routine.

He laughs, makes eye contact, mostly responds to his name, but doesn’t do any other gestures.

Normal toddler behavior or signs of ASD? Let me know your thoughts!

4 month sleep regression

Does anyone else feel like they’re back in the newborn trenches through the 4 month sleep regression ?? 😭😭 my boy turned 4 months yesterday and the past 3 nights he’s woken up every 20-40 minutes. He does manage to get back off to sleep after I give him his dummy. It’s so strange though because his daytime naps don’t seem to be affected? He has 2 x long naps a day (around 2 hours) and a couple 30-40 minutes here and there and seems fine during them, it’s just his night time sleep! I read it can last for 6 weeks, I pray it doesn’t because I am shattered 🤣🤣

Is this a normal poo?

Apologies for picture included. 1 year old has had a funny tummy since Friday not watery diarrhoea but very explosive and paste like poo and he’s not being eating as much but been drinking his milk and water normally! Today we had this poo though and it seemed a very chalk like consistency and very pale. Just asking for thoughts and advice really. He did also have lots of cream on his bum.
