Hi guys,
So I’m due to finish mat leave in February and I’m planning to go back to work on a Saturday and Sunday as her dad (we are separated but he will have her weekends) works mon-fri and i have no other childcare as it seems to cost more an hour for a child minder than i make an hour..
I would be working 12 hour shifts so 24 hours a week.
I’m wondering how this works with universal credit,
As far as i was aware i was told to work 16 hours a week before otherwise your universal credit is affected but recently I’ve seen people saying its being changed so that you have to work atleast 30 hours a week or i will be asked to get another job and this just isn’t possible for me.
Can anyone give me some more information because I’m so confused and worried xx

Do the universal credit calc online and see what you’re entitled to

I believe the first £350 you earn doesn't affect your UC but anything after that reduces that they give you

UC don't expect people with your children to work the children is 3 and can get the free hours, that's what I was told when we were on it

i dont know what i will be making when i go back is the issue xx

I'm pretty sure they don't make you go back to work until they are a couple years old but also you may be entitled to get a percentage of childcare covered through uc as well if you did want to work in the week as well. As far as I'm aware they are also bringing in that everyone gets a certain amount of childcare hours covered once they are one in April and from September next year you can get some hours of childcare covered from 9 months so that might help you as well 😊

I have been speaking to UC over the last month to find some more info out what to do , please remember the calculator is not accurate it is an estimate every situation is different and they take into account your situation, if your child is under 2 you can work 16 hours and get UC if your child is over 2 they do expect you to work more hours as they can provide you with some child care ( of how many hours I’m not sure ) I would call them they r lovely to speak to on the phone x

You can get tax free childcare they give you £2!for every £10 you earn. You have to earn a certain amount each week I think it’s around £180. They are also changing the free hours next year from September you can get free hours from 9 months old.

I currently work two days a week also and I am entitled to universal credit.
When I work more/less hours (due to child sickness or extra time at work) universal credit takes your payment from work into account and works it out based on my income. Some months I get more, some less. But definitely still entitled to it working two days a week (I’m doing 16)
