Last night was our first night home from the hospital. Let me start by saying I have an incredible husband. He is very sweet and always willing to help me. Last night I told him how scared I was and he comforted me and reassured me that we are in this together. He got up 3 times to check on her at my prompting but then he started not responding except to groan at me to stop in his sleep. So I just decided I would check on her every time. That got overwhelming very fast and I even begged him, sobbing, to help me but he was sleeping and refusing to wake up. I ended up laying on the floor of the living room with our newborn baby next to me (about 2 feet away) from 10-7am. The longest stretch of sleep I got was probably 15 minutes. In the morning I begged him to please watch her so I could sleep and he did but he clearly was tired. After he got home from school I told him how hurt I was and if we can please do the night together and his response was “I need to be able to stay awake in my classes and I barely could today.” We ended up agreeing we would respond to her in shifts tonight so I can hopefully sleep. It has been 5 days since I got any real sleep from being in the hospital and I just felt so unimportant and like I shouldn’t need sleep. I love him so much it is just one night but I was so so hurt.

I'm in the same boat right now. Tonight is our 2nd night home and I think I've gotten about 2 hours total of sleep. He's been sleeping all day and night and only waking up occasionally to help. It's very stressful. I have an incredible husband as well but just wish he would be able to take the baby for a bit so I can sleep

Are you staying up all night ? That’s not sustainable for you or your husband. Baby will cry when they need you and you do both need to sleep. Taking shifts doesn’t mean staying up all night, just being the one to respond to baby during that time. I hope you get some sleep, maybe reach out to some extended family for help if you’re feeling overwhelmed and sleep deprived.

I second what Sam said.

Agree with Sam, also are you guys rooming with the baby? I can't tell from your post, but if you aren't I suggest a bedside bassinet, that way baby is in arms reach, you'll feel a lot more comfortable and hopefully you can both rest

Honestly I would fall asleep with my daughter on my chest and would wake and hour or so later and then lay her in her bassinet and go back to sleep it's been mostly me getting up with her at night since my husband is the only one that works she's now 11 months plan to co sleep with our son i have a co sleep bed to put in between us to make it easier and safer

I learned they can seem awake & cry when transitioning sleep cycles! It's suggested to wait & see If baby settles, its a sleep cycle vs being awake and needing you for something...
"Newborns, for example, sleep 16 to 20 hours per day, they wake up every three to four hours to eat, even at night. Nursing babies digest breast milk differently than formula-fed babies, they may wake up and eat more during the late night or early morning! Babies switch from rapid eye movement (REM) sleep to non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. The REM stage is known as “active sleep,” and NREM is known as “quiet sleep.”
Your newborn spends 50% of their nighttime sleep in the REM & the other 50% in the NREM. It’s during the REM that you might hear your baby cry, move around and whimper. Fortunately, these stages change as they grow. Instead of spending 50% in the REM stage (which is when you would hear your baby crying and whimpering) they won’t cry as much in their sleep since their sleep patterns and phases are changing."
Thank you everyone for your advice. 2nd night was definitely better. 3rd night also better than the 2nd. I think we are falling into our rhythm. I wait a bit to see if it’s a real cry and make sure she isn’t hungry (I’m breastfeeding) and if she isn’t then I have my husband take over for diaper changes and soothing around 3am. We are sharing a room with her so every little squeak and sound wakes me up.
