Hi All, I’m a first time mum currently 15 weeks and suffering with really bad HG! I have lost about 7 kg from 20/11/23 to date because I cannot eat or drink anything. The DR’s have given me different types of medications yet nothing works. I’m losing the will to live at this point LOL please please please if you have any tips that really helped you I am begging to know at this point!

I'm so sorry; it sounds like you're dealing with some really tough symptoms.
I'm 16 weeks today in my first pregnancy, and my first 12 weeks were pretty rough- relentless nausea, constant metallic taste in my mouth that furthered nausea, and difficulty drinking enough water.
I'll list some things that I found to help me- I'm not sure what all is relevant for you, but I hope at least a couple of these are helpful!
-Kept a container of saltine and Ritz crackers and a bottle of water by my bed. Before getting up in the morning, ate at least 2 crackers with a bit of water. Waited until my stomach felt a bit more stable before getting out of bed.
-Preggie Pop Drops helped a lot in the first trimester; I found them at Walmart and online.
-Took a half-pill of prescription Zofran (or Odansetron) as closely to the same time each day as possible. If nausea was getting bad before then, I went ahead and took it. This made a world of difference!

-Found a protein-rich breakfast and ate it most mornings, right after getting up. I'm still having two fried eggs, sourdough toast, and some pan-cooked nitrate free ham (Costco's is amazing!)
-Anytime I started feeling nausea coming on, if I hadn't eaten within the past hour or two, I would quickly get a protein-rich snack. My go-to is still a cheese stick, with a nitrate-free piece of ham or turkey wrapped around it
-DGL licorice (chewable tablets) has helped a lot with acid reflux caused by nausea or my digestive system being upset. I usually take 1-2 before going to sleep, or on bumpy car rides.
-I keep packets of alcohol wipes (travel size) in my purse, by my bedside, and in the bathroom. When nausea is at its' worst, smelling one briefly has helped a lot. Also, turning on a fan in front of my face, stepping outside when the weather is cold, and a cold cloth on the back of my neck-- all of these have helped curb my nausea 👍🏻

Hi, I had pretty bad HG 6/9 months of my pregnancy. I tried all nausea meds in the form of pills but couldn’t keep them down for long enough for them to work. In the end what worked was home care for 5 months, where I was administered Saline for hydration, Zofran and Gravol over 12 hour period each day via IVs. Depends on how severe your HG is. But the meds kept me stable enough during the day to eat at least basic food (bland foods, nothing acidic that would trigger reflux).

Saltines was the only thing I could eat but very little of it. Kept trying to drink water and some blue Powerade. Important to try to keep electrolytes up. You have to attempt to stay hydrated otherwise it feels worse. Ginger candies only help for a little while and I was lucky if I didn’t eventually vomit. Some people say peppermint works for them. Keep giving your doc updates, if you lose too much you’ll need to do IV. I had to.

I’m based in the UK so I’ll will have to try and source the products listed. I will give the protein rich breakfast a try and then let you know how it goes lol. Thank you

thank you 😭♥️

omg I’m going to ask my GP! Thank you so much

Chewing ice helped me. I also tried a lot of meds and the only that helped me was Xonvea, in case you haven’t tried that one.

Also dry Rice Krispies to constantly chew on. I feel your pain so much, it’s horrendous.

Omg I was exactly the same with my last pregnancy. I remember thinking this s*** should really be called morning/day/&night sickness!! I thought by week 9 I was going to die. Like literally somehow I would die and the baby would just have to go on without me … 🤦♀️😭
For some reason- protein helps. Milk. Cheese. Chicken. Eggs. Literally anything with protein but I find that animal protein works the best. A lot of people do not suffer from HG so they don’t really make the connection. But protein helps a lot. Idk why!

Have you checked out the HER website, that’s quite good. I’m so sorry you’re going through this it’s pure misery 😢

So soda actually helps with hg if you are a soda drinker.. find caffeine free options. The ingredients in soda without additive ingredients no one would want to drink it it would ruin a stomach, so they went overboard on ingredients and it soothed the nausea in intervals. Ice! They make acupuncture wristbands that are supposed to help too but idk if they do. Potatoes of practically any kind. Pancakes seemed to go well, I wondered if it was the syrup that helped but I never looked into it. For a while tuna helped. Always have crackers and always have a water, a bubbly or soda! Get them nice and cold. I also got massages and that eased my hg a ton!!

I used the Sea Bands (acupressure wrist bands - Boots sells them) and they helped a little! I also had at least 4 drinks on the go at once as I would get sick of one drink after 2 or 3 sips😂 Try Lucozade sport to help with dehydration, I also had sparkling water as it helped wash away the thick feeling in my mouth better than normal water. You can also try hot water and lemon, citrus should help with feeling sick. Strong mints, mint is meant to help with nausea. Echo what others have said about salt, ready salted crisps and salted pretzels was all I could eat really! And ice! Eating/sucking on ice, the cold helps distract from the nausea and hydrates you. Also as tough as it may be try and get some fresh air. I spent days on end in bed unable to move without being sick but having a window open or stepping outside for a few minutes was definitely a big help

Keep an array of snacks in arms reach as well, in case you get a moments relief and feel you could eat something the last thing you want to do is try and find a snack or have to think of something to eat. I found dry and quick things like breakfast bars were good - individually wrapped and normally not too much of a strong or overpowering flavour or smell

😂😂 it’s snowing in the UK & im officially at the walking around with ice stage. It helps sooo much!!

😂😂😂 omg at least I’m not being dramatic! I feel like that everyday and none of my friends/family have had it this bad so they think I’m being over the top!

yeah I’ve been really enjoying coldddd drinks and surprisingly drinking them outside when it’s cold too. Not sure that’s the best thing because temperatures are minus at the moment but it’s the only thing helping 😭😂

when I made it into the office, I had to get a cup of ice from McDonald’s to get me through the tube journey home. People would look at me like I was I crazy eating ice on the tube! Ha!

I get that now!! 😂😂😂 especially as it was snowing yesterday I’m not showing but I think this is my biggest give away

lucozade orange 😍 I hated that drink before pregnancy but it’s helping me so much !

omg I have had so many sugary drinks that I’m so scared I too will have gestational diabetes 😭 at the moment sugary drinks are the only thing that helps. Water literally makes me feel sick 🤮

I was on the BRAT diet supplemented by strawberry protein shakes for most of my pregnancy along with prenatal vitamins. My suggestion and what my doctor told me, find whatever you can keep down and eat that. Consider liquid iv or some form of electrolyte so you don’t get dehydrated.

I have the HG too and 17 weeks. Just taking it day by day at this point 😩. Ondansetron wafers seem to be the only thing that helps it for a few hours.
I’m trying to eat things that is easy to throw up, yogurt, soup, beans is about it 🤦🏼♀️ pray for us!

B6 & unisom, usually when HG take places it’s because of a lack of B6 :( , I too suffer from HG from both my pregnancies luckily it’s not as consistent as my first.

I thought I was being ridiculous! I can’t stand water at the moment 😂😂 thanks for the advice x

I have heard a few women recommend things that come up easily so I will try but I think I have PTSD of eating in general 😭

hugeeee sigh of relief! I literally thought It was self inflicted (you can tell I’ve done no research on it lol) thank you for the advise hun xx

thank youuu! I’ll give them a try xx
