My son has just turned 2 years old and started nursery yesterday. After just 2 sessions of him being there they told me today they can’t accommodate to his needs. My heart sank when they said that. The reasons for this is because he’s delayed in his speech, doesn’t have awareness of danger, sometimes responds to his name and needs 1:1 support which they can’t provide.
I called the health visitor and they reassured me that they haven’t got any concerns from what I’ve told them other than his speech. He can say around 5-10 words, has good understanding and can follow basic tasks. He’s due his 2 year review soon so going to take it from there
I don’t know why but I’m feeling all kinds of emotions, they made me feel like there was something wrong with my little boy 😭

My child 2.2 year old he is understand everything but he is not start talking yet !! Everyone said to me that it is normal if his speech delay then I was not worried otherwise I was always worried about his speech delay he is starting preschool he is done one session hope so he is starting talking !!! 🙂

That’s so sad 😞 I would look into other nurseries. My LB is 2 yrs old too, says less than 20 words. Does understand most things wouldn’t say all dangerous things though. Hes hopefully going to start come March and when I’ve viewed the nursery they’ve all reassured me that his speech should improve being exposed to more LO’s
It’s understandable your upset I would be too ❤️

No 2 year olds have awareness of danger! They are talking utter nonsense lovely. If they really think this then they need to refer him to a paediatrician and begin the echp process. Sounds like it's the nursery that is rubbish to be honest.
My son has learning difficulties, is non verbal with no understanding of language at all and he goes to childcare 2 days a week.
I'd look for somewhere else, not because of your lo but because of them
I hope your child starts talking soon, hopefully with the help of pre-school their speech will start to improve x
I know 😞 that’s exactly what the health visitor said, she said look at other nurseries not all have the same rules. Aw I’m glad you got that reassurance and hopefully his speech will improve! I just hope the next nursery we go take him on x
thank you Mel, yeah I was thinking that too. It’s just the way they said it which upset me abit. That is so good that your son goes 2 days a week and I really hope his speech comes along too! I’m definitely going to look at other nurseries, I’ve got a viewing for 1 tomorrow so fingers crossed it all goes well. I know my lb can be a handful but he’s learning everyday and so proud how far he’s come 🥲

Definitely look into other nurseries, it makes no sense. You described most toddlers at 2. Mine is the same and they were able to accommodate him, I just took him out of daycare for personal reasons but they were more than capable of taking care of him to an extent
exactly it didn’t make no sense to me either but I’m currently looking at other nurseries. The main reasons they said they couldn’t accommodate to his needs is that he has no awareness of danger, doesn’t really listen to you when spoken to, wasn’t responding to his name much but other than that he was playing with all the toys around the nursery, tried to play with the other children. They actually said to me as I was walking out that “we usually have someone who works with children with special needs but they’re already working with 2 other children”. First of alll why even label my child without a diagnosis, it just really wound me up! 😣

That’s crazy that they’ll label a child without any diagnosis
My son is literally the same, I have to tell him it’s dangerous in order for him to stop because he lacks the ability to know what could hurt him 😩 it’s part of development
He also can only say a few words like ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ but as for sentences.. it’s a no go😂
He actively ignores his name being called when he doesn’t want to be distracted, if he’s being naughty or when he doesn’t care🤣😩
I literally always tell him, “they’ve checked your ears so I know you can hear me” 😂
Toddlers are who they are
They just don’t want to work around these things that’s all

They are literally describing a neurotypical child! I'd go as far as to put a complaint in
my little one is exactly the same, he responds when he feels like it however I’m still waiting for an appointment to get his hearing checked just incase. My lb can probably say up to 5 words in context the rest is all babbling but when they said he doesn’t have awareness of danger I was thinking how do you expect a newly 2 year old to know all the hazards around him. I totally agree that toddlers are who they are, I’m just shocked at what they said and how they said it 😞
I was actually thinking of putting a complaint in! I’m not usually the one to do this but this really upset me, its the way it was all said and done. Do you know who and where I complain to? Directly to the preschool nursery or elsewhere?
yes I totally agree, some of the staff were lovely but some just seemed very snobby and just had ‘observing eyes’ on my little one.
Yes I’ve been looking at other nurseries, got a viewing tomorrow. Fingers crossed I have a better experience with them x

I second this. Their nursery should be set up so there is very minimal danger. And I don’t get the talking requirement?! Sounds like a rubbish nursery so maybe you are better off
Quick update on my lb who is turning 3 next month! I ended up looking at other nurseries and I found one close by which is connected to a school. He has been in nursery since march and has made so much progress! His speech and understanding has improved a lot. The Nursery did mention about the speech delay but they said they will support him and he’s currently on waiting list for speech therapy! X
