Mum guilt

I went to see the MCH nurse today and she was lovely. However we got onto the topic of sleep and I hold/cuddle my 8 month old to sleep. She suggested I leave my LO in the cot at bedtime tonight and leave the room. The thing is my daughter cries for me and she suggested that I wait 5 mins before going in etc etc etc etc. She said, “Use your judgment, if she’s really unsettled, go in before the 5 minutes.”

Anyone else hold their babies to sleep? I feel like I’m failing her by doing this. Not that she said I am but the sudden suggestion that she needs to start sleeping by herself made me feel like a failure after I left.

Anyone else hold or rock their babies to sleep?

Will *never* do any cry-to-sleep shit. Studies have shown it’s SO bad for their little brains. Ignore her - she sounds like a dinosaur xx

Right? She said “it’s not cry it out” but it sounds like cry it out to me. My heart/body can’t take the sounds of her cries!

My baby sleeps next to me.

I think a lot of the info provided by the MHCN is outdated.
You do what is right for you.
There is no one size fits all.

If it bothers you that you need to hold her to sleep, then by all means try what you need to. I believe however, that you know what is best for your baby.
Don’t let her opinion or suggestion make you cloud what you feel is right for you & bubba.

My bub now goes to sleep on her own but she is NEVER crying. If she cry’s I go in, settle, soothe or whatever she needs and when I leave again she is settled and content. She also refuses to be held to sleep which is why we now do this!

If holding your bub to sleep works for you and you are both comfortable doing it then there is NOTHING wrong with it. They are only little once, soak up every single moment while you can. Your bub won’t be asking you to hold them to sleep when they are 15!

They told me to do responsive settling, and I found it to be horrific, quite frankly. My bub would cry for up to an hour and still wouldn't sleep. I refuse to listen to them anymore.
She will do it when she's ready.

Please just do what works for your family! My baby will not fall asleep in our arms and prefers to just be put down in her cot. If she's upset though we sing to her til she falls asleep. That being said we just had a boob nap cos that's what she wanted 🤷‍♀️

I cuddle my 7 month old to sleep. Like you, I also can't stand the sound of her being upset, scared or crying, so I won't put her in that position. I feel like it's my responsibility to be her safe place always, and her comfort when she needs it.

I'm all for everyone doing whatever works best for them, and I understand that every child is different, so what works for one might not work for another though.

I co sleep with my 8 month old and let her feed to sleep, the MCH nurse also told me to transfer her and let her cry for 5 mins but I start to cry before that time

Wow! All these comments just goes to show that it’s very natural for mothers to follow their instincts with what feels right for them and their baby. When I got home after the appointment, I couldn’t stop thinking about how much pressure there is for mothers to get it right. Whether it’s starting solids, breast feeding, sleeping situations etc. It doesn’t end!

I don’t have post natal depression but people wonder why some women can’t cope…

But thank you to all who have commented. I’ve read each of your responses and I’m just going to keep doing what feels right at the moment ❤️

Cuddling to sleep sounds amazing! I still need to feed to sleep most of the time. It’s so hard dealing with comments about how to put babies to sleep when the previous generations had different techniques as norm.
My babe is still up 2-3 times a night but I refuse to let her cry without me. I have bad memories of settling myself to sleep after night terrors as a child. My tiredness is totally worth being there for my baby every single time. Especially after I goggled and found out you can’t die form sleep deprivation 😂

Most of the time I will cuddle my little one to sleep she is 6m

It soothes her and then I can put her down.

She is so settled now and knows I will always come for her if she needs me, she has just started falling asleep on her own with me in the room.

It all depends on your baby and your instincts and to be very honest, our little ones aren't this little for long who cares right now if they feel safest being cuddled to sleep.

And it makes me feel happy xx

I know right? Why is there so much pressure to get them sleep independently? Tbh, I know some people who’s babies sleep independently but still get up during the night. This whole idea that “If you get your baby trained to sleep independently, then they will be able to go back to sleep on their own.” I’m sure this is possible for some babies but this one size fits all mentality needs rethinking.

My second child was still waking up once a night until after she was 1 year old, and she was putting herself to sleep from a very young age. 🤷‍♀️

With my first I left her to cry and settle herself and she is great to put to sleep, only cried for about 10 minutes before she went to sleep. My second I still rock to sleep even for naps. I think you also need to go with your baby as they are all different and have different needs.

Self soothing takes months to teach gently (without leaving them crying) and I found it was worth it

I find it really disturbing that Cry It Out is back, like it's the bad old 1960s again

fully agree 💗 I think the "one size fits all" needs to be scrapped on milestones and schooling too 🤭

I always hold my son to sleep. You are not failing by doing this, you’re a supportive and loving mother!

I hold/ feed both my kids to sleep 22 months and 8 months. If you are happy with this, then there is nothing wrong with it. I love holding feeding my kids to sleep. They are small for such a small time and it comforts them. When they are ready is when I will stop. Do not listen to this women

Baby clothes

Just out of curiosity, why do parents love zipper onesies?

Don’t get me wrong, I tried zipper ones it’s easy to zip in and out when putting it on the first time and taking it out, but I find it difficult when changing diapers especially when baby is asleep.

I prefer those kimono style buttons where it’s easy to button or too down button with crotch snaps.

Is everyone thinking the same or different? Lol

At this point I’m not enjoying motherhood

My 22 month old is horrendous at the moment🫣 biting, hitting, pushing, pulling and shoving not only adults but children he also wants what other children have and will just snatch it away from them.

We repeat ‘nice hands’ ‘be gentle’ ‘let’s share’ etc

But how do I make him understand what he’s doing isn’t very nice? At the end of the day I feel like I’ve just been saying his name all day and nothing else.

What can I do?

Dummy

My baby has had a dummy since about 2 weeks old (now 5 months) and over the course of the last month we weaned her off it during the day only for naps and night (which was fine) and then 5 days took it completely away during the day.

The first day no dummy was fine, the second bit rougher. But now it feels impossible she just moans and cries all the time it takes ages for her to go down to sleep (she’s always been an amazing sleeper)

I thought it was meant to get better as time went on not worse. I’m at my wits end I dunno what to do.

Currently typing this as she screams uncontrollably in the car and I cry with her cos I can’t do anything.

Is this normal?

My 12m old is really funny with kids going near him, he’s always been this way, but anytime family’s kids sit next to him or head his way he moans or cries and moves away. He also really observes them and is never really relaxed, always looking over his shoulder. Has anyone experienced this? (He’s starting nursery properly tomorrow so hoping this helps) but is this normal?

Of these two, which seems more overall “demanding” to you, overall? Lighthearted poll, not putting anyone down 🫶🏼

As a mum who breastfed for 3 years, I think formula feeding seems 100x harder and more demanding. I give those mamas all the credit because I could not keep up with that faff haha. I truly don’t understand why people say breastfeeding is more effort, other than the fact that no one else can do it. But personally I’d take that over endless bottle prep & cleaning.
