Need some reassurance!
Is anyone else’s bilingual babies still not really speaking much?!
He understands most things in both languages and he can make all the animal noises when asked🤣 But still doesn’t say any words! The most he says is “dá” (‘give’ in Portuguese)
He can sign a couple things as well so we can communicate quite well with him. (Thank you Ms Rachael!)
My family says this is normal as he’s figuring the 2 languages out, which I know, but just wondered if anyone else can relate?😅

Yes! My baby is being raised with English and Spanish and his comprehension in both languages is great, but hardly any actual words yet. I've heard it's totally normal for bilingual babies and the most important thing is that they show they understand/can communicate what they want non-verbally, or with gestures etc

My son is June born so he is 19 months and no single word he says. Only babbling speaking his own language and pointing with demanding noises. We speak 3 languages at home so I was prepared for that. I also my eldest son didn't really speak at 2 years old for the same reason

My son is also a Portuguese speaker, we live in Portugal and we’ve only had andar and da consistently. My son understands kiss in both for example and will give a kiss so I know he’s getting it. He did start of with lots of words but it’s slowing down now and I’m wondering if that’s why, if he’s having to learn 2 words for each thing so it’s taking longer.
It’s a tricky language and very different to English. Like sounds and word order, everything! I think as a learner too, I have to remember that speaking is the hardest part!

Hi lovely! Mumma and nursery teacher here, I’ve seen this in so many bilingual children. All of a sudden the speaking part just clicks , they start using all of the amazing x2 lots of knowledge in their brains and verbalising it. As an adult I only speak one language and am amazed at the sheer intelligence bilingual children have , their little brains hold so much power! 🤍

Mine is 17 months soon, and he doesn't say many words. We spoke 3 languages in my household.

exactly the same with me, my daughter is learning both of those languages and doesn't really speak much yet x

15 months, bilingual, and I would be pushing it if I said he says a total of 6 words in addition to mama and baba/dada.

Hv said 2-5 words in addition to mama and dada is average and what the look for. These can included animal noises, and signing so I'd say he's right where he needs to be x

Same situation with my son, with Spanish and English. He just says some words, and when he does it is just a one time thing 😅 he understands pretty well both languages though, so I guess they just need more time
