CA Maternity/Disability Leave

Hi everyone! Today I received my disability leave form from my doctor but I want to understand and make sure I’ll qualify and get some clarification on how exactly it works.

So, back story.. I stopped working August 2023.. but went back to work Oct 2023 with a NEW company. I won’t qualify for leave through them, fine. But I want to know- since I’m due in March 2024 that would only be like 5 months at this new job.. do I still qualify for maternity leave through the state disability?!

Also- when do I actually apply? Is it on my leave date from doctors note? Do I do it before or 8 days after?!

Sorry if that’s confusing feel free to ask questions if you need clarification

If you’ve paid into SDI, you qualify. You should still have 16 weeks of job protection under CFRA . You can apply 4 weeks prior to your due date . Also baby bonding is PFL and that’s 8 weeks which will begin directly after your disability

so the length of time I been at a job doesn’t determine if I qualify for SDI.. it’s how much I’ve paid into it?

Yes, it’s a paid into insurance. Your job should be protected by FMLA & CFRA

I’m actually trying to start a paid family leave consulting business around how to navigate all of this! Feel free to follow me @itsyourleave on Instagram, I would also go on the EDD website or you can also into their office in Sacramento I swear that helped me vs calling

To be eligible for State Disability Insurance (SDI) benefits in California for pregnancy, you generally need to meet the following criteria:
1.    Medical Certification: You must have a medical certification from a healthcare provider confirming that you are unable to work due to pregnancy or childbirth.
2.    Earnings Requirement: You need to have earned a certain amount of wages in your base period. The base period is usually the 12-month period leading up to the start of your disability claim. The specific earnings requirement can vary, and the California Employment Development Department (EDD) will use a formula to determine eligibility based on your earnings.
3.    Active Work Status: You must be actively at work when your disability begins, and your disability must be non-work related.
4.    SDI Contributions: You must have paid into the SDI program through payroll deductions. If your employer is required to withhold SDI taxes, you should meet this requirement.

Employment Status: There is no specific duration of employment required with a particular employer. Instead, eligibility is based on your overall employment and earnings history.
It's important to note that SDI benefits for pregnancy are temporary disability benefits, and they are not related to job protection or bonding time with a new child. For job protection and bonding time, you may need to explore other programs such as Paid Family Leave (PFL) or the federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) if applicable.

For the most accurate and up-to-date information, I recommend contacting the California Employment Development Department (EDD) directly or visiting their official website. They can provide specific details based on your individual situation- I got this answer from ChatGPT (which puts together all the info on the internet!) let me know if that is helpful!

Question about ejaculation

I tell my partner to wear a condom not only for protection but also so that there's no mess to clean up when I get up to use the toilet. Is this normal?
I ask because I now have the contraceptive pill but I still want him to wear a condom.
