When I took my maternity leave, I gave my expected return to work date as April 1, 2024. How soon should I get in touch with my employer? My mom seemed surprised I hadn't reached out yet but I thought I could touch base 4 or 6 weeks before to confirm. Any advice?

3 weeks before resumption

I'd suggest if you're sticking with the date, a month before is good. If you want to change your return date, I'd touch base sooner rather than later just to let them know and make sure everything is cool

I suggest a month before but I also think it’s dependent on the type of work you’re doing.

Legally you have to give 4 weeks notice before returning to work after mat leave

Different employers have different policies. It depends on your position. Did you have to train a replacement, were they hired for a certain amount of time? Are you intending on going back Apr 1 or are you changing the date? If I was changing the date, I would reach out earlier. If I wasn't sure of my employer's policy, I would reach out earlier. If I knew my employers policy was 1 months notice and was sticking with my original return date then I would reach out a bit before the month's notice.

in alberta 4 weeks are required. you should be able to find it on the government website for your province
