Breast feeding mammas!

Hey! Are there any other breastfeeding/ c section/ massive baby (9lb6) mammas? I am STRUGGLING to get comfortable whilst feeding, to the point I break into sweats when he gets hungry! 😂 we're nearly 2 1/2 weeks in and my back and scar are killing me.
I was hoping there may be some helpful tips?
FYI - laying down doesn't work because he has such a poor latch (we're getting help with it) so far I'm having to either lean forward or hold him up 🥹

Lots of pillows to bring him up to you is all I can suggest

Hey! I had a 9lb 11oz baby, I didn’t have a C-section but did have an episiotomy so couldn’t sit down straight for weeks 😫

Side lying feeding is a game changer if you can get some help with the latch! It saved my back especially as he continued to grow and get heavier and heavier. They also get really wriggly and the wriggling combined with the weight of them killed my back 😂

When out and about/ I have people over and have to feed sitting up I use cushions to prop baby on so it’s not such a strain on my arms/ back, although not sure if this might irritate your scar.

Hope you find a more comfortable position soon! x

Avatar

Hun, you can breastfeed with a lot of pillows firm ones you can also get cushions quite cheap. I used to breastfeed either on the bed or on the sofa only.

I had a c section and Im breastfeeding. I can only get comfortable in the nursing chair we got one from marketplace for £20 and looks brand new. Don’t know baby’s weight but we’re officially out of 0-1 clothes 🙈

Get the My Brest Friend nursing pillow!
It is a game changer. Worth the money!!

Seriously helps a lot with getting the baby into a comfortable position, which helps you get him to get a good latch!
It saved my back and gives me a free hand. My other hand I use to hold my boob, because my boobs are huge and I don’t want to suffocate my baby.

Also, my baby was born 8.5lbs and I had an emergency c-section and problems with the latch in the beginning too!

Avatar

@Kassia okay! I had held off on getting one because I wasn't sure if they actually helped! 😅 I'll have a look for one. Thank you! 💜

Infant Feeding support??

Avatar

Also c section, baby also had a tongue tie that she grew out off... I went to a breastfeeding workshop at King's before leaving maternity, they adviced me to use nipple shields... Which I did for 6 days until the breastfeeding support woman told me to stop and do without.

My baby had lost almost 10% of her birth weight which is why I got refered but I am sure you have groups in community centers near you where someone professional can give you appropriate advice too?

I also finally got an amazing cushion as a present from hippy chicks which I either use at lower back or under baby https://www.hippychick.com/shop/hippychick-feeding-pillow/

the My Brest Friend brand specifically is the best. It has a flat and firm surface which puts no pressure or weight on your incision! Plus, you wear it (buckle it on), so you can move with it on!

Avatar

This is me wearing the pillow
As you can see, it sits pretty high and very firm!

Nursing pillow and rugby ball hold!

Avatar

Do you have a breastfeeding pillow? If you’re still not mobile I would make sure you have a lot of pillows for back support.

Avatar

@Alice Yeah we're also on nipple shields at the moment. But no one can work out why he can't latch when we take them away 😅 no tie or anything! We've seen so many consultants in just two weeks. Luckily he's gained weight so they aren't super worried.

Avatar

@Kassia that looks perfect! Thank you! 💜

I had a 9lb15oz baby and found the nursing pillow tricky at night but feeding in an office chair with arms to rest the nursing pillow on, with the chair tilted back a bit, but that may have been to take the weight off of me from a tear and an episiotomy....
I might go and google that nursong pillow posted above as it might do the trick this time round(!)
Best of luck figuring out what works for you

Avatar

have you got a nursing pillow? supported me in all the right ways after having a c-section and my baby was pretty big at birth too! very tall at least!
my night feed set up is a huge pregnancy/nursing pillow behind my back then a smaller nursing pillow under baby. i lean right back so my heads resting on the pregnancy pillow!

Avatar

I haven't because I thought they would just be like normal pillows 😅 but I've just ordered one since people are saying they actually work! 🤞

Avatar

That's a new suggestion, thank you! 💜

Do the rugby ball pose!!!! I have a 10.2 baby and it’s the only way it’s comfortable x

Avatar

I had a very small baby but I was so weak after my c-section and she didn't have the best latch. All I can suggest is lots of pillows and do what you can to make yourself comfortable. Laying on the side is great when you get that perfect position just keep working at it. It took me a bit as well but remember you're both learning together and it will take time.

Avatar

I use a breastfeeding pillow with another pillow below that may help

Avatar

thats what i thought but about a week pp i was just thinking these are not working and caved in and bought the nursing pillow haha

Avatar

I agree just to ad I got the brest friend on vented for £7 it helped while he was small

Avatar

Rugby hold could be a good option for you especially with the latch, we struggled with latch to begin with too and rugby hold is the best option for us

Avatar

Putting a stool under your feet and laying back with a nursing pillow can help keep baby steady and comfortable.

Avatar

Use you body pillow I did and do you have a nip shield it helped with my sons latch for the first few months until he could latch better. My c-section was numb for some reason only painful when I would tray to get up. I think my nerves were dead in the beginning. But so what ever makes it comfortable. I am currently 9mths into breastfeeding and that nipple shield works in helping improve the latch. My son can latch in any position now.

Avatar

So I had a section and my babe was 8lb2 when she was born I found the most comfortable position was the rugby ball hold as it took a lot of the pressure of my belly and the front of my body xx

Avatar

I am breastfeeding/csection mom with 8.5lb baby. I had a side effect and lost sense on my left foot. I struggled but I saw lactation consultant a few sessions and they helped me with different positions, right latch so my nipples would hurt and pumping options and way and other ideas and options. It absolutely helped

Avatar

I have used a boppy pillow for both my kids with a ton of pillows behind me. I found it easier to nurse in a chair or couch instead of the bed. Hopefully you'll find something that works! Best of luck!

Avatar

Have you tried a wrap carrier? Any soft fabric carrier can be used to breastfeed and help take the strain off your arms and back

Avatar

That was me before. It’ll pass. Give it like 2 more weeks and then you’ll be able to feed however. The boopy was a life saver.

Avatar

omg I would get this weird numbing feeling on my left leg whenever I would breastfeed.

Avatar

I had a 9lb 10 bub via c-section and I seemed to end up sitting back with my feet up on the bed and knees bent so his weight was supported across my thighs, gives more arm movement too to help with latching

Avatar

Yup. Had a c section and my kiddo was 9.98lbs at birth 😅 if you don’t have one I found a my breast friend nursing pillow to be very helpful… less bending and you can shove a pillow under it if you need more support. I nursed until 20months, he was atleast 20lbs when I stopped and probably would have hung on until age two if milk hadn’t dried up😞. That pillow made all the difference… and a comfy chair and a high pain tolerance and a SO who will get baby and bring him to you when you really can’t get out of bed. Good luck mama you can do this…. I know the first bit (lol 3months?) is rough for sure. It gets easier and harder in different ways as time passes. Try to enjoy him being little (ish) because time REALLY flies in survival mode.

Avatar

It will get easier, the first 4 weeks with my son were miserable as we were both learning how to breastfeed but after that first month the soreness subsided and we were both more comfortable

Avatar

Have you tried the boppy to help and sitting up against something while on your bed?

Avatar

look up this exercise 'Sciatic Nerve Flossing' you can do it while you are breastfeeding. Has helped me a lot. Also, try using a firm chair instead of any soft seating. Hope your foot feels normal soon xx

Avatar

popping back as I'm now day 9 pp with no.2 and whilst this one is significantly smaller than my first, I've remembered a life saver from my big baby was him sitting astride my leg on the opposite side to feeding, pulling him in tummy to tummy and laying my feeding side arm down his body.
No idea if there is a technical name but it absolutely saved my back once he was too heavy for a cradle or koala hold
Hope you're finding things that work for you both x

Leaky nappy help

What nappies are you using to stop leaks?? We use pampers ultra dry size 5, and for the past few nights he has lashed through and we’ve had to completely change him during the night. Last night he leashed through twice!! He sleeps on his front and stays leaks through at the top of his leg where the tabs connect. Didn’t know whether to size up, he has a bit of a belly on him but he’s smack in middle of weight guidance so shouldn’t need too

When do things get easier?

As we entered the 9-12 month stage, my son started crawling and pulling himself up. He also became more clingy and does not play alone, still doesnt sleep through the night, and this week has been sick (so EVERYTHING amplified). I am tired and overwhelmed. Please lie and tell me things get better. 🥺

4 month bed time

What time do you put your babies to bed?
What time do you start your 'routine?'
My LO currently goes to bed around 10.30pm, and I know i need to start bringing it forward. Everytime ive tried, it takes longer for my LO to settle.
We are exclusively breastfeeding. Any advice Mamas?

5.30am wakeups 😫😴

My 15 week old has started waking up about 5.30am and is really hard to settle back down - it’s like he thinks it’s time to wake up for the day. He used to go to bed at 9pm and was up at 8am but now he goes to bed between 7.30-8pm as he’s knackered by then but waking up at 5.30am😴. Any advice to get him to sleep a little longer in the morning?! Even an extra hour would be lovely 🤣
