The “no sleep” statement

Okay so no I haven’t been a mom before and I know you lose sleep when the baby gets here. I am very much aware that I will be getting no sleep. Does this annoy anyone else or just me? I have people constantly like 2 times a day say prepare for no sleep.

Like I’ll be napping and my mom will call or his mom will call and I won’t answer because I’m trying to take a nap. And they laugh and say if you think you’re tired now just wait.

I’ve gone without sleep before, hell I was in boot camp running on 2 hours of sleep a day for three months. I was on a submarine with two watches a day while working in a completely dark room all day and then going to bed on a hard ass bed (so when you did sleep it wasn’t the best). Also there is not as much oxygen on submarines so you are just tired for no reason.

With this being said, I know having a newborn will be exhausting. I know I’ll be lucky to get those two hours of sleep. I know it will be hard, and I’m not prepared but like damn, let me just take my nap without any comments…

Sorry for the rant :)

Ignore the comments. I used to get this constantly when I was pregnant, despite all the horror stories of no sleep i quickly realised every baby is so different when it comes to sleep. My LO only ever woke up once a night as a newborn and now sleeps through and is still a fantastic sleeper at 9 months, however my friends baby woke up 6 times a night throughout. Don’t worry about everyone else and do what’s right for you. 😊

thank you! I just get so annoyed! Like if I’m not gonna get any sleep when she’s here, stop calling me while I’m sleeping 😅

Avatar

It’s just so negative isn’t it! I guess people are trying to prepare you but it’s constant and I know… like I don’t know how bad it will be but at least let me try and be positive about it first 😂
My husband is in the military and is used to working on lack of sleep also, he will be much better prepared than I am as someone who sleeps A LOT.
But you just have to cope/get on with it so people saying “just you wait” doesn’t help anything 🤦🏻‍♀️

pregnancy tired is so much worse than newborn tired 100%! xx

Honestly, I prefer postpartum over pregnancy. I may be sleep deprived, but at least I’m not fatigued and heavy and unable to move well. My feet aren’t swollen and I can wear normal clothes! I also don’t pee 24/7. The only thing between me and sleep is the challenge of getting the baby to sleep at night off of me and feeding frequently.

Avatar

Ignore them. My baby is 6 months old now and whilst she woke a lot for the first 2 months or so, she has slept 8+ hours overnight consistently since 3 months old and now sleeps 7pm-7am. I sleep much better now than I did when I was pregnant x

Its very annoying to hear that and to hear “sleep when the baby sleeps.” There are a bunch if other things i want to do when baby sleeps, if im tired ill nap but i hate hearing sleep when the baby sleeps.

My MIL likes to make the “no sleep” comments too. It’s like, “Yes, MIL, I am very aware of this.”

I have had 4 day long insomnia episodes where I didn’t get any sleep at all (due to ADHD and another mental condition) and still functioned enough to do school work and not lose my shit on someone before I crashed for 10 hours the next two days. I imagine taking care of the baby will be similar but at least I’ll actually get an hour or two here and there. I’d rather get a little sleep and feel like I’m barely functioning, than not get any at all and feel like I’m going to drop dead in the next five minutes.

I hate the “just wait” comments.

Yes it can be hard. Have you been tired before? It literally just feels like that. 😂

“Just wait til you don’t sleep cos they’re up all night”

You know what. Just wait til you lean over that crib and pick them up - when they need you, the tired feeling goes away.

Just wait til the night feeds when it’s just you and them looking at each other with no distractions. They’re the best bonding time.

Just wait til your bubba is unwell and needs your comfort - you know the feeling all too well and you’re happy to be there for them no matter how tired you may feel.

Just wait. It’s the best.

Pregnancy sleep is so much worse. Look forward to having a newborn 😂

Avatar

Yeah it’s annoying. I wasn’t sleeping well my last trimester. Everything was uncomfortable. I sleep better with the baby than I did that last trimester due to being exhausted, I fall asleep easily 😂

Avatar

Nah I hate this every time I hear it. I haven’t slept comfortably since I 💦 on a stick. I’ve been sleeping propped up due to nausea/congestion, on my side cause of the bump. I’m looking FORWARD to intermittent postpartum sleep!!!

Avatar

Lool u might get a really sleepy baby, everyone was like be prepared for no sleep but my daughters always been a pretty good sleeper so we get good sleep

Avatar

or when his mom says you guys are gonna have no idea what to do. Like yea. No sh**. I’m going to be clueless like my MIL and my mom were when they brought babies home for the first time. Luckily there is this thing called the internet where I can look stuff up, ask on here, or call them to ask for advice… no I don’t know what I’m doing as I’ve never had a baby before… and I’m sure with my second I’ll be just as lost

Avatar

my response to this or to “are you ready?” Is “I’m ready to be completely unprepared for it all!”
Because no matter how much you plan and get ahead every baby is different and it’s not something we’ve ever done before.
I just want people to let me be excited about it and not scaremonger all the time!

Avatar

pregnancy sleep is so much worse i’d rather wake up to feed and change than because i’m nauseous or because my belly is so damn heavy

Avatar

Yes I used to hate that statement! But, when my boy was born I was shocked at the amount of sleep I did manage to get because the expectation had been set very low from hearing that statement all the time that I’d “never sleep again”

Better to have a realistic expectation of sleep I reckon. I see lots of posts from mums who seem shocked their baby isn’t sleeping through the night 🤦‍♀️ I don’t expect my baby to sleep through the night until he’s at least 2 years old 🤷‍♀️ I don’t mind waking up a few times in the night for him, it’s not a big deal.

PREGNANCY TIREDNESS IS A WHOLE DIFFERENT LEVEL!!! Newborn/baby tiredness has NOTHING on pregnancy tiredness!!!!

Avatar

I used 2 enjoy getting up for night feeds with my daughter and I’m looking forward 2 it again this time round with my daughter that’s due in 33 days time 😁 tiredness in pregnancy is more exhausting than with newborn x

Avatar

Wait till after birth you’ll get the “baby getting it the way for another one” “ second one comes quick” “oh you know what that means just because he spit his bottle out for the first time or something.. it’s mad annoying and yess I feel like it’s gets put on to you fr because I’m pregnant with my second 2 under 2” then it’s a bunch of I told you so’s. As for your case I was already a night owl and been through similar military training so they surely should’ve known getting a nap is hard on the regular🙄

Avatar

It is my literal worst 🙄 that’s the last thing I need people saying to me!

Avatar

Tbh I HATE the "just wait" comments.. but I will say that I totally didn't quite grasp how hard it was going to be, and now I would INSTEAD of saying to someone "oh just wait for this terrible thing to happen you'll see how miserable you are and then I can say I told ya so" I would say, "hey if you haven't heard of sleep experts like taking cara babies, check her out!" Actually giving good advice is so underrated..

Baby clothes

Just out of curiosity, why do parents love zipper onesies?

Don’t get me wrong, I tried zipper ones it’s easy to zip in and out when putting it on the first time and taking it out, but I find it difficult when changing diapers especially when baby is asleep.

I prefer those kimono style buttons where it’s easy to button or too down button with crotch snaps.

Is everyone thinking the same or different? Lol

At this point I’m not enjoying motherhood

My 22 month old is horrendous at the moment🫣 biting, hitting, pushing, pulling and shoving not only adults but children he also wants what other children have and will just snatch it away from them.

We repeat ‘nice hands’ ‘be gentle’ ‘let’s share’ etc

But how do I make him understand what he’s doing isn’t very nice? At the end of the day I feel like I’ve just been saying his name all day and nothing else.

What can I do?

This might rattle some people

Ok, this might get a bit long, and a bit bumpy, so get comfy and buckle up.

So about a week or 2 ago, there was a post on here regarding sleepovers. Not letting their child go to them as you can't trust who'll be at the house etc.

Now, given recent incidents in nurseries and schools, plus my own experience back in the 90s, I am more concerned about sending my child to nursery and later school than I am to a friend's house for a sleep over.

The other day a man was jailed for abusing children at the nursery he worked at. A woman has been arrested for sleeping with an underage boy and then getting pregnant by a different underage boy while on bail for the first offence.

Young girls and boys get sexually harassed and bullied when at school, not all of them. But more than you think. And not just by other kids, but by adults who we as parents are trusting to look after our kids.

A sleepover, is a more controlled environment, with only a handful of people coming into contact with your child. A school, a club etc there can be 100s of people coming into contact with your child.

I was targeted at 7 years old by the owner of a prominent private school. Thankfully, I wasn't SA'd. In year 5 of primary school, I started to develop early, I was harassed by the boys and teachers made remarks about how my uniform didn't fit right, always "adjusting it" around my chest and legs.

Years 7-9 of secondary school were hell. But it was all under the guise of "we're just messing around". A teacher twanging my exposed bra strap (none uniform day) is not "messing around".

Boys pinning me down trying to rip open my shirt to see my breasts.

I fear for my daughter. I hope she takes after my father's family, flat chested.

We need to educate all our children, what is acceptable behaviour. And to come to us, as their parents should ANYTHING happen.

Dummy

My baby has had a dummy since about 2 weeks old (now 5 months) and over the course of the last month we weaned her off it during the day only for naps and night (which was fine) and then 5 days took it completely away during the day.

The first day no dummy was fine, the second bit rougher. But now it feels impossible she just moans and cries all the time it takes ages for her to go down to sleep (she’s always been an amazing sleeper)

I thought it was meant to get better as time went on not worse. I’m at my wits end I dunno what to do.

Currently typing this as she screams uncontrollably in the car and I cry with her cos I can’t do anything.

Help

My LO every feed. Drs don’t seem to think it’s a problem the whole Muslim cloth gets soaked so much I’m using towels now. I’ve tried size O teats he gets really frustrated and still spills it out :(

Of these two, which seems more overall “demanding” to you, overall? Lighthearted poll, not putting anyone down 🫶🏼

As a mum who breastfed for 3 years, I think formula feeding seems 100x harder and more demanding. I give those mamas all the credit because I could not keep up with that faff haha. I truly don’t understand why people say breastfeeding is more effort, other than the fact that no one else can do it. But personally I’d take that over endless bottle prep & cleaning.
