So our 5.5m old little girl is normally v happy and carefree, barely cries. But she’s really suffering with her teeth right now, is inconsolable at night, and won’t be put down for naps (even contact naps) without screaming and crying!! She’s also suffering a cold so has a runny nose and a cough. She was so congested night before last that we had to take it in 2 hour shifts to nurse her semi-upright as she couldn’t even be laid flat in her cot. She’s also had loose poos and terrible farts and is down on her feeds (by about 10-12oz). Last night she kept waking crying and just couldn’t be soothed until wore herself out crying. I was crying too as can’t bear seeing her so distressed. We’ve tried everything, calpol, nurofen, teething gels, granules, humidifiers, olbas oil, vapour rubs, steamy baths, raising the head of her cot… nothing is soothing her. Please help!!

So sorry 😔 have you tried ANBESOL liquid for her teeth? We’ve had a few colds now and this is what has helped us - vapour stick rub on back, chest & feet, vapour drops around cot, vapour bath, saline nose spray and frida nose sucker. Alternate calpol and nurofen. Plus use your humidifier too. Have pain medicine drawn up ready to give asap on waking (if it’s the right time for meditation) you can also do a gentle little sinus massage around nose to help drain it. Don’t have room too warm that doesn’t help being stuffed up. Other than this I would just book a gp appointment make sure there is nothing else like her ears or anything 🫶🏼.
Sorry I know it’s absolutely awful 😩

If she’s really having trouble breathing with the congestion, you could try a nasal rinse. We had to do that for my girl when she got sick and it really helped her get a few hours of sleep and to eat some more since it gets all the stuff that’s really far in her nasal passages/stuck in her throat. It really sucks to watch and do but it may help. We only did the rinse when it was really up there and couldn’t be sucked out with saline spray and the frida sucker

ambesol is literally the only thing we haven’t tried for her teeth so getting some today. We’ve done everything else I think - vapour rub, saline, olbas drops. We have a Frida but couldn’t use it last night as she was so distressed - might try again today though!! We’ll alternate calpol and nurofen today solidly and see if it makes a difference - she’s terrible at taking it though and we tried putting in her feeds but she was off them too so we were wasting milk and she wasn’t getting the full med dose. I did think about a gp appt if this carries on. Thank you x

thank you - how did you do this?!

I don’t know if you’ve tried this, but our little girl won’t take calpol unless it’s through a bottle teat. I often have a spare one sterilised and just syringe the calpol into that and she will just suck until all gone. Then I will give her milk after if it’s time for feeding. Hope she starts to feel better soon x

I know this sounds nuts but I know you said you took steamy baths, but how steamy are we talking and for how long? Cause at that time my son had really bad congestion too and was up almost all night. I made our bathroom into a steam room (had the shower on hot). I had him in my arms for 7mins max, he was able to sleep for a good while after.

Bless her, mine was the same a few weeks ago. A frozen washcloth can sometimes provide relief for teething if you haven’t already tried it

yeah we ran the shower really hot then stood her in there before bathing her but will do it again later for longer!

thank you yes we have done this but she gets so wet!! Then we have to change her and it all starts again… 😂

interesting thank you will try?!

thank you yes have humidifiers everywhere! She’s not weaning yet unfortunately so not sure about the onions but we do need to use the suction.

we used an upside down squeeze bottle, kind of like a postpartum peri bottle we got for a few dollars, filled it with warm water, one of you needs to hold baby over the sink with her arms by her sides (it was dad in our house) and you take the bottle and lightly squeeze water into one nostril and it will come out the other side with all the snot and gunk stuck in her nose and throat. She will cry and scream but she will feel heaps better. Good luck!

Check her ears! When my daughter was teething she almost always got ear infections with it. I didn’t even realize until the doctor looked in her ears. At night time they will feel a lot worse. Children Tylenol and infant ibuprofen is what we used with our daughter. They also give her an antibiotic for her ears

Anbesol gel actually numbs the gums and gives like a cooling sensation,I tried it myself to see what it can do . It was the only thing that helped us . Xx

Electeic nasal suction

weird you should say that as she’s been pulling her ears and putting her head to her shoulders on the side. Plus really uncomfortable being put to sleep in cradle hold… will get her checked out, thank you.

Please take to get checked to be sure nothing else is wrong. I hope she’s better soon.

Hello 🌸
I hope your baby gets well.
Just a heads up about my friends similar situation … until baby being treated with acupuncture . I hope this helps you too 🍀

what was wrong with them?

I'd say, if you'd tried everything, go to the doctor

Thanks all been checked out at docs and no ear infection but just a virus we need to ride out x
