Can you start to Dilate without contractions?

Can you start dilating without feeling contractions?
I’m 38 weeks and have yet to even have a single Braxton hicks contraction let alone a regular contraction. I opted to not have a cervix exam done at my OB appt today but might at my 39 week as a baseline. My doctor was very nice and helpful today in the reasons why a cervix exam is good vs unnecessary etc, but the nurse at the start of my appointment was kinda rude in general but said “if you’ve had no contraction you’re probably not dilated at all anyway”. Is this true? It makes sense that the contractions occur during dilation but curious if you can start to become dilated without feeling a contraction? Or maybe it’s just not painful enough for me to notice from the other pregnancy aches and pains??

I didn’t have any when pregnant with my son at least none that I felt. I was dilated to about a 2 around 39weeks.

I didn’t start feeling consistent contractions until I was 4cm. Before that I barely felt any cramping, if anything I felt more lower back pain

Everyone’s body is different but those early stages of dilating can take hours to days to even weeks to happen so you may not necessarily feel them that early on

I gave birth at 38+4! You got this mama!

Contractions of the uterus is what makes dilation happen. One can’t exist without the other. Even if you’re dilated a tiny amount, it means you’ve experienced contractions but just might not have felt them.

Absolutely. I was 1.5 dialated this time at 37 weeks and only a sporadic Braxton hicks here and there but with my first I was also 1cm at 37 weeks and had no contractions prior to that. They arent really the same. Sex helps you start to dialate too!

I just had my 38 week appointment and they had me do fetal monitoring because I’m over 35. The monitors actually showed me contracting about every 6 minutes, but I couldn’t even feel them. They showed me my stomach was getting hard during them.

I am almost 2 cm and 70% effaced. I opted to do the cervix checks because women in my family tend to dilate and efface early and then have lightning fast labors so I wanted the information.

Yes. 5 days ago I was 2cm and only thing I’ve felt so far is a tight belly here and there… maybe that’s what that is. 🤷‍♀️ I felt even less with my first baby until I was in active labor.

Induction?

Anyone been induced before? Was it more painful? Better than thought? Worse than thought? Worth it? Thoughts?

Induction or c section?

As a last resort, would you rather be induced or have a planned c section?

Really not liking the thought of being induced from people’s experiences I’ve read!

C section or natural?

I am a control freak and thinking c section is the least stressful route for me and baby… less complications during labour etc. whilst acknowledging recovering can be hard.
If it could be guaranteed no tearing or complications then I would opt for natural and kind of want to experience the feeling.
Then again could plan and go either way 😂 arghh!
Anyone else in this predicament?

Homebirth?

I am thinking I want a homebirth (second baby) for a few different reasons but my husband is very against it, he is worried about things going wrong and we are a 30 minute drive from the hospital. Has anyone been in a similar position and what did you end up doing? Any advice? 🙏
