Typical length of stay after caesarean

After my first caesarean I feel I came home too soon and could have done another night. I was in for about 21/23 hours after giving birth. People said beforehand stay as long as you can, you get constant care and looking back it was actually a lovely experience - I know some people aren’t this lucky.

How long did you stay in after a your caesarean, did it feel too long, too short or just right?

I stayed 5 days. I had a horrific labour and birth though. 60+ hours in labour, which led to an emergency c-section.
They asked if I was comfortable going home on the fourth day but I requested to stay another day. I appreciated the extra care I was receiving in hospital but definitely missing home and my husband as he wasn't allowed to stay overnight

I had Emergency c-section around 10al and left hospital the next day at 6/7pm :) xx

I had emergency section on the Wednesday and begged to go home on the Saturday (bubs was jaundiced but improving well). I was ready for home on the Friday though x

I was there for about 32 hours as I had her at 3am so stayed 24 hours then had to wait for the dr to do his rounds and discharge me after that. I felt fine to go home when I did and would’ve gone at 24 hours if it wasn’t the middle of the night x

Avatar

I stayed 24h and was crazy to go home but should’ve stayed longer really

Avatar

this is the thing for me too, I missed my partner because he wasn’t allowed to stay so I wanted to get home, but felt once I was home the pressure on him to take care of me and help with the baby could have been relieved if I’d stay in a day or two more

Avatar

oh yes I’m in the UK, they said as soon as I’d passed a certain amount of urine and been to the toilet I was allowed to go home, I will definitely be staying longer than the 24 this time but I didn’t know that was a rule!

Avatar

did you find recovery okay at home x

Avatar

that’s how I feel looking back, kind of wish I did an extra day or night

I had my little boy via elective on Thursday and going home today. They wanted to ensure breastfeeding was well established before I left and that baby’s nappies were frequent enough as he’d been drowsy and reluctant to feed for the first day xx

Avatar

I have! I honestly couldn't sleep around all the other people at the hospital also so home felt peaceful.

It was the self injection part that was a ''okay I have to do it'' part! The rest I tried not to listen to the pain too much so I could focus on baby and positive stuff!! Just take it easy :)

Avatar

2 days both times. Here they have to allow you 3 days of there's no complications with a c section but I hate just sitting in a hospital

Avatar

I went home the following afternoon, fiancé stayed with me the whole time, they said aslong as I could pass enough urine after having the catheter out I was good to go x

Avatar

I stayed in the city hospital where I had my section for 27 hours and when I was discharged I then transferred myself to a local birth centre that has a post natal ward and stayed a further 4 nights.
I was really glad I stayed longer rather than going straight home as they gave me feeding support, picked up my baby had slight jaundice and also my wound was infected so they got me antibiotics.
Looking back I think staying in 2 or 3 nights extra would have been enough as I was really ready to come home by the end but I do think staying in longer helped it feel less overwhelming when I came home as I had gotten used to having the baby a bit more.

Wow that's insane!! I'm from Australia and with a caesarian you HAVE to stay in hospital for a minimum of 4 days or 5 if it's an emergency C.

Take as long as you can. It's a major operation.

Pause for one second... I'm going to reiterate a MAJOR operation.

Avatar

I had an emergency cesarean 9:35PM and left the next day in the late afternoon 🤷🏻‍♀️ wasn't even there for 20 hours after birth lol
They were super pushy for me to stay at least 24 hours, but they wouldn't allow hubby to stay and I literally could not move and preferred to go home!

Avatar

Ummm.... That's not right at all!! (Obviously not saying your incorrect) more that what the hospital did was wrong! I'm a nurse..... And they are not supposed to let you. With hubby not there I assume you went public as most private hospitals in Melbourne (at least) have double bed rooms.

Avatar

I had a planned and stayed 4 days, 3 nights. Here in the US, they usually allow up to 4 nights, so I could’ve stayed one more, but I was feeling good.

Avatar

We stayed for 9 days and absolutely hated it.

I really struggled looking after myself and my baby at the same time. Midwives were not very helpful and I had to log and time his feeds on a chart and I was given the responsibility of sorting out the phototherapy machine.

I was also moved around the ward 3 times and had to carry all my stuff and wheel the equipment around.

I almost had a mental breakdown.

Avatar

Nearly 48h. They wanted to discharge me about 12 hours earlier but the pharmacist had a backlog and it took that long to prepare my take home medication 🙈

Avatar

I was 8 days because my wee one was on a course of antibiotics and then my BP went mental. I was climbing the walls by day 8 but days 1-4 I was grateful to be there and have the support of the midwife and nursing teams. Don’t rush yourself, I’ve seen so many people need to go back in after having a c section because they didn’t allow themselves to recover at an appropriate pace.

Avatar

I had a cat 1 emergency c-section on Wednesday 4.48am and my infection markers were high so with a bit of a fight they let me go home around 6pm Friday night
I honestly didn't want to be there anymore as I went in Monday morning for a induction and I'd hardly slept at all

Avatar

Stayed 2 nights; could have been 1 but had to wait on car seat. Tbh I was happy to go.

Avatar

I had my c section at 1pm then was home 11.30am the next day. I couldn't wait to get home and be with my older kids and partner. Was out walking withing a week and back to working after 4 weeks x

Avatar

i stayed 2 nights, got asked to stay another night but decided to go home, then when home i felt the biggest regret 🙃 i’d stay in 3/4 nights if i have one again

Avatar

i stayed 4 days. This time i’m hoping for a 24 hour stay. Will probably hire someone to stay with us for a week & help out at home as i’ve two toddlers.

Avatar

I had had to stay not by choice my son had jaundice

Avatar

here in the US if you pay for insurance or dot have it’s like $35,000-$50,000 I’m glad I have government insurance if not idk from where I was going to get that money to pay it back

Avatar

I had my first via scheduled C due to medical reasons and we stayed 5 days

Avatar

I stayed two days, they took their time doing the babies test plus they had to monitor his sugar since I had GD, they asked if I wanted to stay another day but I didn’t want to

Avatar

24 hours for both of mine. First emergency and second elective. It is hard at home the first week but I hate being in hospital and especially when I had my second baby as my first was only 21 months and i hated being away from her 🥺

Avatar

In the UK, the NHS nurses try to discharge you as soon as possible. Also yes they are they for you if you call for them but if you don’t call for them you’re there to fend for yourself. It almost felt like I was pestering them. For example they forgot to give me my medication, I also didn’t know and by 6am I was in so much pain.

There were other things that just made me not want to stay. At least at home I had my partner who could help me. I chose to leave after 24 hours

Day out after c section

Hey,
I had an emergency c section 1 week ago I obviously don't want a day out right now but I have things booked for the Easter holidays so in 2 weeks. I was just wondering if I will be overdoing it if I have a day out then or will I be ok? I would still take it as easy as I could. When did everyone feel good enough to go out?

Period like cramps

Hi
I’m currently 33 weeks pregnant and I keep getting period like cramps I thought these were Brixton hicks but I’ve heard they only last 30 seconds ish as this can go on for a good time frame then go away and come back, they aren’t bad enough where I can’t do basic things they just feel like I’m about to get my period I’m jus wondering how normal this is? Baby is still very actively kicking xx

C section or natural?

I am a control freak and thinking c section is the least stressful route for me and baby… less complications during labour etc. whilst acknowledging recovering can be hard.
If it could be guaranteed no tearing or complications then I would opt for natural and kind of want to experience the feeling.
Then again could plan and go either way 😂 arghh!
Anyone else in this predicament?

Midwife check

Can someone remind me when the midwife visits you at home? Is it the day after you’re discharged? And is that the same on the weekend or do they not visit then? Thanks!
