Trouble Latching

Hi I’m a New Mom to my Second but technically First Baby (Rainbow Baby❤️‍🩹) I’m currently having trouble with my son latching I really wanted to just breastfeed but formula has been more constant, I pump but I barely make 2 oz. I’ve been trying to do my research and the most common thing I found that’s helped a lot of moms has been to keep up with a proper eating schedule for the baby, waking them up to eat like every 1hr 1/2 - 2 hours before the baby gets too fussy and is really hungry, but I guess because I haven’t been successful in latching I’ve been so discouraged, I’ve gone to my local WIC office and thankfully one of their latching consultants helped me get him latched this past week 1 whole hour and I was proud but being back home doing it myself I’ve had no luck, if anyone has any suggestions or willing to tell me more about your experience and what helped you I’d appreciate it.

-Also I don’t mind the formula but as a Mom to a heavenly angel who passed at 2 months and lived his whole life in the NICU I saw first hand how beneficial breast milk was to him since he was born weighing 1pd 1 ounce and I just want to have that experience with my son rn.

Anyways thank u if u took time to read this post❤️

I had so much trouble with my son’s latch, and it took a long time for it to be easy but I’m glad I kept trying. It’s SO hard but that doesn’t mean it’s always going to be hard 💚

I found lots of skin contact, asking my husband to check our position, putting drops of milk on my sons lip and “burger hold” (so attractive 😅) to squish my boob into his mouth! I went to see A LOT of lactation consultants and got snippets of help from everyone that added up to be able to crack it.

One thing to mention is that (if everything is healthy) your supply will meet your babies need, so if you top up with formula you should pump as well so your boobs don’t think your babe missed a feed

please do and can u send me ur protein diet like what do you eat daily bc im lost as to what to eat sometimes I’d like to keep my diet on anything that can also boost my breast milk

thank you I saw a lactation consultant I was iffy of going again bc she was extremely helpful and help get my first real latch with my son I just wished one time was enough to encourage me to be successful in it but I think I’ll just head over to her daily to keep getting help

For me, quite a bit of the advice didn’t work and it was just a case of trying everything and seeing what worked! Everyone has an opinion and if something works for you then just go for it! For example, I was recently told the “burger hold” was awful for letdown and would give me blocked ducts- but it never did, and it massively helped his latch.

You can see on my profile a post about how frustrated I was, but now 15 months on and I’m still feeding and it’s so easy and I love it!

how old is your baby now ?

if you want to up your production you can try supplements like moringa, milk thistle, brewer yeast supplements

and power pump 20 10 rest 10 minutes pump

you can as well try a nipple shield if your comfortable with it

are your nipples inverted ?

maybe try the football hold on which ever side your baby turns too

all the advice i can give you is stop giving the bottle if that’s what your doing 🥹 and just attach to the boob 2 ounces each boob is okay and your body will start making more the more you attach baby

check your flange size if you haven’t done so

Hello! I had problems too. I did well laying in bed tummy to tummy and feeding that way. I used to have to grab the skin on my areola and pull it up so my nipple was more of a sliver like a flat line that i could slip between his lips. Also sometimes squirting a lil milk in his mouth then slipping the nip in his mouth helped.

I had trouble latching with my baby too & it was a journey but it stuck at it & I am now 6m established BF. Has your baby been checked for tongue tie too? My LB was told he was tongue tied but not enough to have it cut. We went private in the end & it completely changed my BF journey!

I had low supply at the start as my milk was delayed coming in. I had to do formula top ups as he lost weight at the start.

Lots of skin to skin & keep putting him on the breast, then pump & it will eventually all fall into place. You need to drink a shit tonne of water too & stay hydrated!

Happy for you to message me if you want any further help. Hang in there it took me a good 6 weeks to find our groove x

im trying not to give myself a hard time and really trying to find my own way through all suggestions I hear, ur is frustrating but hopefully my own way will come easy once I find it

Avatar

so I tried grabbing my skin on the areola like u did and it worked for a but I’ll keep trying because he actually latched on

Avatar

he latched beautifully when I went to see a lactation consultant but once I got home and tried for myself i couldn’t do it on my own, I’ve heard skin to skin helps so I need to keep trying that and see where our rhythm will come from

When do things get easier?

As we entered the 9-12 month stage, my son started crawling and pulling himself up. He also became more clingy and does not play alone, still doesnt sleep through the night, and this week has been sick (so EVERYTHING amplified). I am tired and overwhelmed. Please lie and tell me things get better. 🥺

Colostrum storing?

Has anyone successfully extracted colostrum before the baby’s born? Apparently it gets produced from 16w pregnant and you can start storing it in the freezer but I’m 34w looking at my nipples and the syringes on amazon wondering how it works?? Like what did you use and did it hurt? 🥲

Self settling

Any tips or advice of how to teach 6.5month old to self settle? I’m up multiple times in the night to cuddle her back to sleep and put the dummy in. I understand she will wake up and want a cuddle etc but any tips on self settling would be appreciated 🥰

Baby losing weight

Hi all, it's been a long time since I had a baby (my son is 15!). My daughter is 10 days old and was 9lb born, she has since lost weight at every appointment and is at a 12% loss. I am breast feeding every two hours for over an hour and topping her up every feed. I pump and can get 60ml in 10 minutes so I know my supply is okay. Anyone had this before? Can give me some tips? I currently feel like I'm letting my baby down.

Did I overreact?

I have had 3 c sections, recently had a wisdom teeth removal (4) to be exact and all my mom did was visit the day BEFORE and then she only sent 1 text. She has NEVER spent one full day with me and doesn’t acknowledge my achievements much. She just isn’t there when I need her to be. She claims she’s always working but she lives like 7 minutes away! she can come help with the kids so my husband can have break? we don’t ask her for much and she only sees the kids 1-2 a month. She also didn’t visit with my last c section. I told her that she should’ve gotten the abortion when she had the chance with me because why would you have me and neglect me emotionally? To not actually give me a present father in my life. I am very angry all she does is disappoint me. She only wants to show up for certain people in the family and I just want to grab her and shake her and ask her why can’t she be a good present mother?
