3 to 2 nap transition - how?

Hello, so baby boy has just turned 8 months and I'm finally seeing the signs for a nap transition (suddenly hard to put down for naps, waking between 4-5am again 🥴, third nap interfering with the bedtime).

BUT - I'm not sure how to transition?

He rarely sleeps longer than 9.5hrs overnight, he's not consistently napping long enough (can do 1.5hrs for 1st nap one day but only 40min the next day), and he cannot always handle the longer wake windows required for a 2 nap schedule.

What did you do?

If we started to follow a set timed routine he will be overtired. If we follow wake windows and sleepy cues we have to put a third nap in but then he wakes early again and the cycle continues... 🤔

Right now instead of napping, he's stealing the pegs from the line 😂

Girl you’re so lucky your baby even naps . My baby only naps for like 10min lol 😂 is that even called a nap. Now she’s 8months and she naps for an hour 👏 to be honest I just go with the flow as I tried set a routine for my daughter but it did not work 😂. I follow her routine . I’m happy I can now rest a bit more 🙌🏽

Sounds harsh but we had to push to a 3 hour wake window. I kept him awake any way I could. First three days- hell. Now, 1.5 in the morning, 30-1 hour in the afternoon and 12.5 solid overnight. I promise you it works, but you have to stick it out. To add- baby only did 3 30 min naps before this and I never thought we would get better naps 😂

Following! My boy has just hit 8 month regression and I’m in sleep/ rest deprivation hell 🫠🫠🫠

No advice on the naps , but the airer my baby takes my knickers off when she’s in the walker and runs away with them hanging off her walker 🤣🤣

For right or wrong I have ended up pushing my LOs wake windows and she actually coped surprisingly well!
We do follow a rough schedule and have had to do very early bedtimes sometimes when her afternoon nap has been too short but it did amaze me how she copes with the longer wake windows.
9am first nap, usually an hour.
Second between 1.30 and 2pm (can be as short as 30mins)
Bedtime ideally 7 but often nearer 6.30pm

Don’t know whether you try to resettle with naps, like today, my LG woke after 38 mins…..but I went in, didn’t engage in looking or talking, just put my hand through the bar and held hers. After 6 mins she fell asleep again for 53 mins. Some days she’ll take up to 15 mins to resettle, other days she’s wide awake, babbling away and giggling and I know it’s not gonna work 🤣 always worth a try though.

Thank you , that's encouraging! My husband suggested the same. I was afraid he'll be too tired, but it's true that on some days, he can manage absolutely fine 🤔

I used to be able to resettle him about 4 months ago.. then it somehow stopped working so I stopped trying 😂 My mum tried though when she was here and had no luck 😞

that's a classic 🤣

My girl transitioned to 2 naps and started waking at 4am on the dot every morning.
We had to push bedtime back to 8:30 and got a 30 min nap in around 4:30/5pm and she’s finally started waking later again

bless you, contact naps are hard when you have to do things or look after other kids! 🙈
Mine also wakes 2-3x a night which I don't mind as that's at the moment the only time he actually properly breastfeeds and gets the calories in (too distracted during the day 🙄). It's the 4am wake ups that kill me 🫣

Avatar

so you think she's transitioned too early before?
Mines started waking like this with 3 naps so I was actually hoping that cutting down a nap might help?

Far too early for her, of course every baby’s different. But my girl couldn’t cope with just the 2naps, she was incredibly over tired come bedtime which was causing the early wakes xx

Since our little one has gone onto two naps she seems to nap longer. If her second nap is early or not long we just move bed time forward. I use to worry she would work even earlier than she does. However she doesn’t tbh she still wakes up at her usual time.

When do things get easier?

As we entered the 9-12 month stage, my son started crawling and pulling himself up. He also became more clingy and does not play alone, still doesnt sleep through the night, and this week has been sick (so EVERYTHING amplified). I am tired and overwhelmed. Please lie and tell me things get better. 🥺

Colostrum storing?

Has anyone successfully extracted colostrum before the baby’s born? Apparently it gets produced from 16w pregnant and you can start storing it in the freezer but I’m 34w looking at my nipples and the syringes on amazon wondering how it works?? Like what did you use and did it hurt? 🥲

Self settling

Any tips or advice of how to teach 6.5month old to self settle? I’m up multiple times in the night to cuddle her back to sleep and put the dummy in. I understand she will wake up and want a cuddle etc but any tips on self settling would be appreciated 🥰

Baby losing weight

Hi all, it's been a long time since I had a baby (my son is 15!). My daughter is 10 days old and was 9lb born, she has since lost weight at every appointment and is at a 12% loss. I am breast feeding every two hours for over an hour and topping her up every feed. I pump and can get 60ml in 10 minutes so I know my supply is okay. Anyone had this before? Can give me some tips? I currently feel like I'm letting my baby down.

Did I overreact?

I have had 3 c sections, recently had a wisdom teeth removal (4) to be exact and all my mom did was visit the day BEFORE and then she only sent 1 text. She has NEVER spent one full day with me and doesn’t acknowledge my achievements much. She just isn’t there when I need her to be. She claims she’s always working but she lives like 7 minutes away! she can come help with the kids so my husband can have break? we don’t ask her for much and she only sees the kids 1-2 a month. She also didn’t visit with my last c section. I told her that she should’ve gotten the abortion when she had the chance with me because why would you have me and neglect me emotionally? To not actually give me a present father in my life. I am very angry all she does is disappoint me. She only wants to show up for certain people in the family and I just want to grab her and shake her and ask her why can’t she be a good present mother?
