First time mom, no car when baby comes during labor - tips welcome.

I'm located in South London, don't own a car and plan to give birth at St Thomas. We don't think it's feasible to rent a car when I go into labor because who knows when that will be + we won't need it much other than getting to and from hospital. I don't think it's good use of time for husband to be looking for parking when he's meant to support me! Has anyone gone through this without a car? If logistics don't work out, we may rent a car but I'd love to avoid if possible.

Any tips during labor and driving to/from hospital?

Did you Uber during labor and how was that experience?

When bringing newborn back home, did you take your own car seat or find an Uber that provided one? I heard hospitals won't let you leave without a car seat

Thank you!

We got an Uber and it was fine. We took our own car seat for coming home

We used zipcar they’re located all round London and there is a drop off zone near st Thomas xx

I would bring car seat though as most taxis/Ubers don’t have them xx

I took uber to st thomas. My partner called for it and took bags down snd I just got in. The driver was clueless but I didn't care. We had to promise him a big tip to take us anywhere near the door and he still parked soooo far away but luckily was a wheelchair in the car park so my partner grabbed that and I didn't have to walk
Family drove us home but we took uber back to A&E the next day for a bloody nappy and it was fine we used our own car seat. Baby was fine BTW we just had to get it checked

For the labour I planned for this so had my meditations playing in my earphones, Hot water bottle on front, tens machine on back and sleeping mask on so I didn't get distracted and could focus l. I held combs in my hand or sometimes held partners hand whatever I preferred. I will say have your purple book ready and out because my partner was too silly to listen to me it needed to be out and he was rummaging for it in the bag and they won't do anything to help you in the MAU until you give the purple book

I took an Uber home with my second baby. I had the car seat with me at the hospital and just strapped it in when I left. No problem.

No help on getting home, but it’s a myth that hospitals won’t let you leave without a car seat.
There is no law against leaving with your baby in a pram.

No car either over here! As i was induced, a friend dropped us off. And to go home, we had a car seat but couldn’t find any cab.. so we took the bus 😂 it was surprisingly very smooth. Now my son is obsessed with buses ♥️

We got a local cab company to take us when I was in labour. The driver was brilliant and got us to Chelsea and Westminster hospital from Croydon in 35 mins. He even hung around for a few mins to make sure we went on ok. We took our own car seat for the journey back and family drove us home. I had my tens machine in and hubby massaging my back on the way. Good luck 😊 you will get fine xx

ooh that's really good to know - especially the drop off being near st Thomas. Thank you

Thanks for the tips, very helpful when in the car. What's a purple book?

A family from my NCT group used Carrot Car taxis who provide a car seat for £10 extra. They were happy with them.

yeah my husband dropped me right outside the door so I could waddle my way in because the lifts take ageeeeesss at st Thomas and he met me less then 5 minutes later. Just meant I could make all the silly noises I wanted in the car without feeling weird about being in a taxi, and we knew 1000% they weren’t going to say no.

I know someone who tried to get an Uber but when they arrived would let them in because they were in Labour and didn’t want them giving birth in the car. Made me to anxious to even try with Uber

Uber to the hospital, and black cab on our way home with baby in the pram. Black cabs allow you to take the pram in so you don’t need to faff with a car seat if you don’t have one.

Can I ask for st Thomas is your partner allowed to drop/pick you up from the a&e part because I assume the walk is quite long ??

I got an Uber to st Thomas’s, the driver was lovely. He only knew because of my belly and my bags that I was in labour. We also got one back and brought our car seat up to go back in because I’ve never heard of Ubers that have their own.

it’s best he drops you off where the car park is as he doesn’t have to go through the barrier, he can just drop you and then you just walk to the end and take the lift straight up

Thanks so much

Things you wish you’d do before C-Section

I’m having my section on Sunday, and trying to write a bunch of ‘self-care’ type things I want to do before hand.
Now I’m not talking the practical things like setting up changing or feeding stations etc. I’m talking things for you like shaving your legs or dying your eyebrows 😂
I know from my last section that I’m not gunna feel my best so I want to do everything I can to feel good! I’ve got a fresh haircut already!
So what are some things you did / wish you did before your c section?

UK Mums: If you had an assigned midwife for your first pregnancy, but not your 2nd. Were you a bit disappointed?

For my first pregnancy I was blessed with having an assigned midwife that I saw every appointment. She was absolutely amazing, so I guess I was spoiled in that sense. This pregnancy, I see a different midwife every appointment and I am a bit disappointed. Before anyone jumps on my back I know it is not guaranteed to have an assigned midwife. It is just hard when each midwife answered my question differently at each appointment and it took the epilepsy clinic (was referred due to having seizures in the last) to give me the actual answer. I also keep getting told that if I have any general questions to contact MAU, but I always thought they were there for urgent matters? Anyways sorry for rambling, I am just a person that feels at ease with consistency 😭

Help!

Stuck on names, I have an Ollie already.

We were set on Hugo but I don’t like any of the shortened nicknames for Hugo and don’t feel it’s as easy to say as Ollie! What do you think?

Heart murmur

Took my 4 month old to the GP yesterday for something unrelated and when checking him over they heard a heart murmur. That didn’t say too much and scheduled another GP appointment for next week. Just wondering if any other mummas babies have had one and what their journeys were/if baby just grew out of it. Thank you x
