12+5 Appointment

I have some questions about my 12 week appointment. I recently moved and I’m going to a new obgyn. I haven’t met him yet and am really nervous so I called the office to ask what I should expect for my appointment and if I need to bring anything. I am a first time mom and I’m on the younger side. The receptionist laughed at me and then when she was done laughing she said “you’ll discuss it with the doctor. Just don’t stress.” I was like “did you just laugh at me?” And she got quiet for a second then said “I can ask the nurse” I told her that would be amazing then she said “well you can ask the nurse” and I said “that’s great! Can I speak to them please” she then said “well I’ll leave her a note and she can call you, is that fine?” I said yeah and then she hung up.

I don’t know if I’m over reacting but that felt unprofessional to me. I am nervous about having a man OB because I have some trauma but I didn’t want to share that with her. My sister just went to her 7 week appointment and they did a vaginal exam and Pap smear because she needed one. I’ve never had either so I didn’t know if I should expect that.

All that being said I called my mom and she told me I should see if I can get an appointment with someone else in the area. Do you agree? Disagree? Was it ridiculous for me to call and ask? Am I in the wrong?

Follow up question: what happened for everyone’s 12 week’s appointment and what do you think I should expect?

I would go to my first appointment and maybe the professional stuff are nice. If not, I would go somewhere else. I agree with your mom too but if you don’t want to wait for another appointment with another doctor then I’ll go with them.

I changed OB’s due to a bad phone exchange about changing my appointment - you did the right thing by calling with concerns, I say trust your gut.

For my first appointment (10 weeks) they did a wellness exam which includes a breast exam, vaginal exam and Pap smear since I was due for mine (I get them every year) then they did the vaginal ultrasound. I have a man OB for the first time and I felt weird at first, but I kept telling myself “this is their job, they do this all day and their goal is to keep you and the baby healthy” there is usually a nurse in the room accompanying you which comforted me as well.

You’re not in the wrong for calling and asking and getting an experience like that just like I didn’t deserve the way I was treated when I simply asked to move my appointment day. We all deserve respect especially when going through this time as first time moms when it’s confusing & scary.

Sending hugs! My DM is open if you need to chat more!! 🤍🫶🏻

At my first appointment (10 weeks) they did a pelvic exam and a breast exam. I didn’t have a pap since I just had one in August. They measured my fundal height, and just went over the basics (prenatal, calcium, what to eat/not eat, what to do/ not do, etc.) They gave me a packet even though this is my second just so I had something to look at if I needed. They also scheduled me a 12 week ultrasound at that time. I have a male doctor. I live in a rural area so he specializes in family medicine. He actually birthed me and was my doctor for my first child. So my babies will be birthed by him and can see him for as long as they like. He’s been my primary Dr for as long as I can remember. I LOVE him! It doesn’t bother me that I see a male doctor. He is very thorough, and takes precautions when he thinks it’s needed. He made my birthing experience very enjoyable.

But I can see where that would rub you wrong. I’ve asked questions about appointments before and had the receptionist say back handed comments to me before that wouldn’t bother some people, but bothered me.

The first appointment includes a pap if you haven’t had one in the last year.
