Soooo we were told at our first appointment with the health visitor and then again with the midwife that my lo has a tongue tie. we were asked a couple of questions about his feeding etc as he’s exclusively breastfed and all was well at the time so we were told to just carry on as we were but he’s now 5 weeks old and haven’t seen either since but I’ve noticed he’s clicking his tongue a lot more whilst feeding and his gassiness is at all time high he has screamed and cried for the majority of today he’s only napped twice for around 45 mins each and still squirming and grunting during his naps! I’ve done some research and found these two things can be related and a tongue tie can cause gas and colicky symptoms. just wondering if anyone has had their lo’s tongue tie corrected and it’s helped things or even just the pros and cons with it pls?!? From a mama that needs some sleep

My now 5yo had a tongue tie. It was noticed at the breastfeeding support group I went too. He was also exclusively breastfed and from about 4-9 weeks he was barely putting on any weight despite bf loads. They referred us for the correction at the hospital. He had it at about 6 weeks. It is very quick & seemed no worse pain than a vaccination for him. His latch improved, feeding was more comfortable afterwards & he was more content. Although he was still not gaining enough weight so we did combination feeding from around 10weeks.
I would definitely get support from a breastfeeding specialist. Mine were so helpful at my local children's centre. All the best.

My now 7 week old has had this procedure done recently. He is formula fed, i noticed it myself and health visitor and midwife confirmed it for me, he too had problems with latching on bottles spent a fortune on trying different bottles, the milk was just leaking out of his mouth he used to end up soaked every feed, he has been tons better since having it done, it was very very quickly and had a feed straight after and the healing process never phased him at all, i would 100% suggest getting it done x

We were actually the opposite - my girl had a 100% tongue tie which caused no noticeable issues at all but because it was all the way to the front they wanted to correct it . I did notice colic slightly improved after too. I would honestly get it done regardless of issues its causing now as I hear it can cause problems with speech later on - also correcting it later is more complicated and painful. They get over it so quick when theyre this little , Id say go for it! Cons that they dont tell you before is it can grow back in the first 6 weeks, and of course infection but that doesnt seem to be common. they give you a way to massage the area to help prevent it reoccuring but i honestly was terrible at remembering and got lucky that it didnt x

My 5 year old and nearly 5 week old have both had tongue ties
My 1st they went to do it and told me it was to thick so he had to have it lazered under anaesthetic
I cant be sure of his symptoms from it as he had pyloric stenosis at the same time but once both ops were done together he was a different baby all together this was at 1 month old
My 2nd it was known from birth she had a tongue tie but our hv did referrals and it wasn't getting anywhere so I asked gp at the 8 week check and got her tongue tie done at 3 months old
Hers was thick but doable so they did it there and then! Honestly was at the hospital 5 minutes max as she went straight back to sleep afterwards and didn't want food, she started gaining weight a bit better and stopped clicking and making squeaking noises when having her bottle
Both formula fed though
Baby will cry at initial pain but honestly its just like injections it's just the shock of it and its over with
It can also affect speech if left

Both my boys have been tongue tied.
My first son’s got missed due to how things were with COVID at the time. His tongue still doesn’t suction to the palate and he so mouth breathes at night- not optimal, and lots and lots of cons to mouth breathing.
My youngest son had his cut at about 6 weeks- it made a fairly noticeable improvement straight away. He wasn’t having any issues with weight gain, but was feeding so so frequently, I was in pain, he was super windy and unsettled, slept with mouth open etc. I have no regrets getting it snipped!

I got my LO's lip and tongue tie cut at ENT at 3 weeks. Took 5 minutes, she didn't seem to be in pain after. Took 5 days to heal and started latching better once she was used to it.
