I'm wrestling with the decision if I should return back to work or not? My husband has proposed the idea to me, if I was not to return back to work? With me being on mat leave it surely has given us an idea of what it would be like living on one income. I work in downtown Toronto and the commute to and from home has always been an issue with the GO train. The rush hour traffic will always be a nightmare and we are concerned about our son's dropoff and pickups in the near future whether it be daycare or grade school. I work in government and to leave all the years of service and benefits scares me, but I trust my husband can support us and I don't want to miss out on my son's growth and development. I do wonder if this will affect my mental health. I think wouldn't this be anyone's dream but I do wonder will I be out of touch with reality and socially awkward once this SAHM becomes my life? Ultimately the decision is mine but id love to hear any advice, pros vs cons, from you mamas. TIA xx

I went through this too! It’s a very hard decision. I would say first and foremost, make a budget with only your husbands income to be 100% certain you guys can afford it.
Then I made a bunch of pro/con lists. I ultimately decided to stay home. For me it came down to the fact that I will have years to go beck to my career and my daughter will only be little once. But I am a teacher so I don’t really have to worry about career growth or anything like that. Aka it won’t hurt my career to take the time off.
I also made sure to talk to my husband about the division of household chores and childcare duties. You need to make sure you are book agreeing to the same thing. My husband is still expected to do his share if house chores and childcare on weekends and nights and stuff.
For me, it also has really help going to baby groups and mom groups and the library. I was very worried about being home all the time, but it has been okay because we get out a lot and are around other people.

You don't need to be a SAHM for the rest of your life though! The first 3 years of life are the most important ones in a child's life. Being there is of paramount importance. But in the great scheme of things this is very little time, a drop in the ocean... If you return to work after that, that's OK. If you stay at home a bit longer, say till 5 years, even better. And even then you'd still have loads of years of "work" ahead of you...

If he has proposed the idea to you I’m sure he is worried of you guys living off one income . Aslong as being a SAHM is for you , and something you are comfortable setting aside your income to fully depend on a man income I guess . But always have a plan b sometimes things can go left , raising a kid is expensive nowadays in my eyes I am only raising one and it’s a lot on me still with having a job in the health field . But i am still able to see him everyday , I’m not missing out I work from 8am-3pm then my son gets dropped off from daycare.. I don’t know how old your children’s or child is but it’s goin to be a lot of pressure on your husband , he may not say it now but time will tell

I loved this reply as a stay at home mum myself it gives appreciation to the main purpose of the whole idea and I don’t feel alone. 🥹 it reminds me my baby isnt going to stay a baby forever🥲

I’m of course biased, but I do think it is SO beneficial for babies to have mama home for the first few years. Before I had my girl I worked as a nanny, and every day i saw how sad little ones would be and miss their mom. I think it is absolutely worth the sacrifice, and you will have an incredibly strong bond with your child. That to me, is worth more than any job. You can go back to work, but you can never have your child small again.

I'm living as a single person on maternity leave at the moment. I've spent many years as a SAHM and it's not so bad. I'm going to go back to my normal dead-end shop job for the foreseeable. I've given up thinking about a career ☺️
