I’m 17 weeks pregnant with my first baby. I’ve heard you should only sleep on your left side from the second trimester. Ive got a pregnancy pillow and find myself falling asleep on my left side but I always turn back on my back and wake up in the morning sleeping on my back. Baby is at the back too, what’s the reasons as to why we shouldn’t sleep anywhere but our left side? Is it dangerous? Im worried but don’t know how to stay asleep on my side and not turn during the night, anyone have any advice please?

You can sleep either side, both are fine. Sleeping on your back should be avoided the further along you get though.

Can you try putting a pillow on the other side of you to kind of prevent you from rolling? I believe the concern is the pressure it puts on you/baby when on the back, I think blood flow? Not entirely sure but once you catch yourself on your back just change position and you should be fine, as long as you’re not feeling light headed / unwell because of it.

You shouldn’t sleep on your back due to blood flow I found the further along I got my legs would go tingly after 10/15 mins of laying on my back and it could reduce blood flow to baby but I wouldn’t worry to much just re adjust and go back to sleep! X

I know not everyone will be the same but i naturally wake up if I roll in my sleep onto my back. I have hip issues so really struggle on my sides all night but instantly wake once I’m on my back, and allow myself 10 or so mins then go back to sleep on alternate side. Left is advised due to our major organs being that side of our body , but either side is actually fine to sleep on. I feel more comfortable on left due to baby position :)

Definitely try a pregnancy pillow or pillow to prop your side up and try to prevent rolling though! I try and cocoon myself into mine! 😂

Left is better if you suffer from heartburn as your stomach is lower than when you're on your right side.

I kept rolling like a kebab thingy especially in my 3rd. I'm a stomach sleeper and I woke up on my stomach a few times but by 20 weeks it was uncomfortable so tried the side sleep and found it hard, don't beat yourself up if you wake on your back its okay. Talk to your midwife you may be surprised at what they say x

Thankyou all x
