Hi all!
HOW do people teach their baby to self soothe haha
Our LO (7m)will wake up in the night and burst out crying, as soon as you put his funny in he’ll stop and go back to sleep but otherwise he will just get more and more upset
Will be transitioning him to his own room soon and really don’t want to have to go in 3/4 times a night just to pop his dummy back! X

I actually found with both my babies that they slept better in their own rooms for a variety of reasons. First, they couldn’t smell my milk. Second, we didn’t wake each other up with every little shift in bed. And third, because they were in their own room, I didn’t mistake a short waking for a full waking and intervene too quickly because I usually slept through it.

Does he suck is hands/fingers? If yes then let him do that rather than a dummy

no he doesn’t! He literally only has his dummy for bedtime not during the day x

he’s been waking up crying for a couple of weeks now, I don’t think it’s to do with the dummy as he’ll wake up upset even when he’s still got it in sometimes x

I’ve heard a few people say this!

Babies aren’t meant to self soothe - their brains are unable to do so and they need to borrow from us and our nervous systems. I have read that, when they wake up crying, it’s a disrupted sleep cycle and they need support to feel safe to fall asleep again and connect sleep cycles (something their brains are still learning in those first few years) because they essentially were startled out of a deep sleep.
The more you nurture them and support them through any of their emotions, the more their nervous systems learns to regulate over time.
