Needing some advise on starting BLW, My little one doesn’t seem to be taking purées well and spits everything out, so looking at BLW but I don’t know where to start! I’m so scared of him choking it freaks me out!
What foods has everyone started with? I’ve watched loads of videos and it looks like such a choking hazard with BLW foods, Just looking for reassurance that LO will be fine 🙈

Veggies- soft cooked carrot, broccoli, cauliflower, squash, sweet potato and courgette. Avocado, eggs, toast, fruits, yoghurt etc.
If you cook and serve things in the appropriate way, it is safe. Know what to do if baby does begin to choke (first aid course, YouTube videos etc)

Have a look at "starting solids" app it's very helpful. We've been doing blw and only had a scare once and he wasn't even choking.
We found purees much easier. Not every baby is ready at the same time. Don't give up I know it can be scary and overwhelming

Solid starts app shows you how to serve everything- they can have most things! Courgette sticks (steamed), boiled egg and melty puffs have been hits for my baby. They will gag and cough a little but stay calm- they are really good at moving food forward to spit it out if they have taken too much. Watch a youtube video on the difference between gagging (normal- red, watery eyes) and choking (not normal- silent, blue, not breathing). Its not as scary as you think honestly

Day 1 - broccoli sticks
Day 2 - courgette sticks
Day 3 - avocado slices
Day 4 - potato sticks
Day 5 - blended spinach with potato sticks
Day 6 - cauliflower
Day 7 - swede sticks
Day 8 - green beans
Day 9 - slightly mashed aubergine
Day 10 - blended kale with potato sticks
Day 11 - mushy peas and potato sticks
Day 12 - broccoli sticks with pasta
Day 13 - tofu, potato sticks and mushy peas
Day 14 - babies first chilli with potato sticks and guacamole
(She doesn't seem keen on potato so I'm trying to introduce it as much as I can!)
This is what the first 2 weeks looked like for us. Ivy likes feeding herself and she's not keen on finger foods but she does NOT like purees. She does like mashed stuff though as I think the texture is better.
They will gag. This is normal. This is them learning how to move food in their mouth.
Offer a combination of foods i.e. if you're offering potato give it to them in two ways of mash and sticks if you are able to.

Theres a website called First Steps Nutrition where you can download books for free (it's a pay that you can scheme for the download) and it even recommends portions and how to for BLW or even puree based.
Remember these early months are about them learning to eat, getting as much exposure as possible and it can take up to 10 experiences with a food for your baby to like it. Even it that means rubbing it in their hair.
Theres also How To Wean Your Baby by Charlotte Stirling-Reed which you can get on kindle app for a few quid. We were following it religiously at one point but now it's evolved into traditional baby led weaning of Ivy sharing our meals so last night she had butter tofu curry but I made hers slightly different to ours and the night before she had pasta with us

I just wanted to jump on this thread as I am feeling massive guilty for not doing BLW as I’m terrified. My little girl has tongue tie and I just don’t understand she’s going to spit food out. HV has assured me she will be able to but she can’t stick her tongue out and can only move it to the right. I just feel like she’s going to struggle getting food out of her mouth. I feel so upset, like I’m letting her down only giving her purées and feel like im never going to be aable to give her actual food. 😭

you’re not letting her down at all and have no guilt. Cut yourself some slack and do whatever is working best for you and your baby!
But, just to say my eldest had (has) a tongue tie that we didn’t get released (covid made it really difficult to any help as a newborn and by the time I went private for it, it wasn’t necessarily going to be of immediate benefit, anyway that’s another story for another day 😂) and he didn’t have any issues as a baby doing BLW. He learnt to gag things forward, and had no trouble spitting stuff out of his mouth, and he also couldn’t extend his tongue out of his mouth at the time, He eats like a champ now at 3 (with his, albeit improved, tongue tie!)
