My little boy is nearly 3 weeks old. For the last two nights his sleep has completely changed. We used to have a period of active sleep from 4am ish but now we have grunting/moaning/squirming as soon as we lay him down from 9-10pm and it’s constant aside from 5-10 mins of quiet here and there. He has pooed twice overnight, burped, fed, weed, passed gas but he still sounds/seems uncomfortable? I’m aware newborns go through sleep cycles but this is all night and constant and just not sure what to do/where to go next with this? Does anyone else’s baby do similar at this point? Any help much appreciated as so sleep deprived 🥺

Does he have other signs of colic?

no - he’s a bit fussy and cluster feeds in evening but no screaming or prolonged crying

I just have them sleep on my chest when they’re like this

My baby does too, we were told its reflux by her gp x

It's called Dyschezia and it's a very common condition in newborns. It's because they haven't figured out how to use their pooping muscles properly yet. Instead of relaxing their pelvic floor to poop, they tense which results in grunting and straining, as if they are constipated. Their poops are normal mush consistency though. They will grow out of it once they have better control of the pelvic floor and sphinctor.
If they do have hard poops, that's genuine constipation and will need medical attention.

that’s what I thought but thought it unusual to go on all night and be pretty constant?

though episodes usually only last around 10 minutes, they can continue until baby actually poops. There have been instances of it continuing for 6+ hours at night. They sleep through it, it's just us poor parents that lose sleep from the constant grunting. Experts reckon babies don't feel pain from it.
My daughter had me up for 2 solid hours the other night with an episode.

My little girl does the exact same! it started from around 4 weeks, she’s 6 weeks now and still does the same, it only seems to happen during her night time sleep and rarely when she sleeps during the day, and it goes on pretty much throughout the night. I was planning to ask the health visitor about it today

Yep my daughter is the same. I have found a dummy helps to settle her a little but she won’t always take it

My little girl does this too, we have some nights where she doesn't or only does it for 30 minutes but last night I had it all night.
She sleeps through it, unfort me and my husband don't 🙃
In the day she sleeps fine

@Estella my little girl is the same..let us know what your HV said xxx

showed the HV my video and she said it’s normal and they tend to grow out of it around 3/4 months. 😫 a lot of babies tend to do this in the night it’s their digestive system. So long as her poo’s throughout are looking normal ( soft and yellow as she is breast fed) then it’s all fine, but if she starts to look like she is constipated or struggling to poo or turns red then I should take her to the GP. X

came to say the same thing, we had it from 5-6.30 I kept thinking he was awake but was asleep then about 7 he did a massive poo!

thanks
