Hiya, my baby is 4 and a half months and i’m not entirely sure how to tell or when his ready to drop to 3 naps a day. His night sleep is super disruptive, we wake up 6 times a night sometimes even more but he has always been a bad sleeper since he was a newborn, his day naps are only 30-35 minutes long and then he wakes up crying half of the time. We struggle to put him to sleep for every nap and needs a lot of assistance and rocking. I do think his going through the 4 month regression and teething which made things a little harder in general but I was wondering if his short naps and frequent waking at night can also be due to him not being tired enough. I tried to keep him awake for longer than 2 hours and it just turns into a crying episode.
Any advice is welcome.
Thank you!

Try less naps for longer times. If he wakes up crying try to get him back to sleep. My little one is 5 months he has two naps that last about 2 hours. If he wakes up before 1 hour I get him back to sleep then he's happy for another 3 hours until his next nap or 2 hours after afternoon nap till bed time. He usually sleeps through the night. Every baby/family is different but this is what works for us. It means I have more time where I can actually get things done too. He naps on me alot of the time though
Having said all of this, he should be napping now and is currently laying there smiling at me 🤦♀️🤣

Sounds like you need to drop to 3 longer naps to me. It sounds like he isn’t ready to sleep and is then waking after one sleep cycle because he’s not tired enough. We unintentionally ended up doing this around the same age, it just happened naturally. I found a 1.5 hour sleep window worked well for us at 4.5 months. The closer it got to the 2 hour mark he would get really grumpy and overtired and it was hard to settle him x

Thank you for your comments! How would i go about dropping to 3 naps ?

I just tried to stick to a set routine based on wake windows/nap durations. I would do a 1-1.5 hour nap in the morning, if possible up to 2-3 hours at lunchtime and then 30-45mins later in the day. Then awake 2 hours before bedtime x

Thank you, I may try getting him down for 3 naps rather than 4 now and see how it goes. Xx

I don’t know how to drop naps so won’t pretend, but I found paying attention to age appropriate wake windows really helped us at around 3 months. Also looking at some example sleep/nap schedules, on huckleberry for example, was good to avoid being overtired/undertired. Also using good sleep associations that help to connect sleep cycles seems to work when my 4.5 month old wakes up after only ~40 mins 👍🏻
