Anterior placenta

Basically I have gone for a 4D scan today to see baby girls beautiful face in more detail, typically she had both legs and arms up near her face so it wasn't possible, however the lady doing the scan mentioned me having an anterior placenta and that it's harder to get a good shot because the placenta gets in the way, however I am 29 weeks pregnant and have never been told I have an anterior placenta by anyone this far along, which I find quite shocking.. I just want to know if this is normal or should I have been told about this way before today?

I was told at a private scan… when I went to the hospital, I mentioned it and they said.. “yeah, you have.” Don’t know if they would have told me otherwise or not.

I was also told by private scan at 16wks. I don't think NHS tell you as it's not a concern to your baby or labour. Only time they'll tell you is if you have low lying placenta covering your cervix but only because it can affect labour.
Did the private scan not offer you to go for a walk? Eat or drink.etc and get baby moving? This happened to us and we went back 10 min later and got a face shot. Although not amazing as placenta was covering some side of face.

Well that's eased my mind a little bit at least so thank you. Yes they actually sent me on a walk for 40 minutes, I had a drink, came back and she was still in the same position, but I seem to have a stubborn little girl who doesn't like to make scans easy, at my gender scan she had her legs crossed and they sent me out three times so walk around haha.

Hi ..
Completely understand your frustration with not being told however, unless you had issues it’s not something they generally share. I have an anterior placenta also. It’s completely normal. You have have an anterior or posterior placenta.

Anterior placenta you will feel less intense movements from baby as there is a cushion in between your baby and your belly.

As long as everything is healthy, I wouldn’t worry 😘
Hope this helps and makes a bit of sense x

Your placenta may have moved positions maybe. I got told at my NHS scan that I have an anterior placenta and it’s written in my maternity notes. I would have thought they would have done the same?

Avatar

Hello, yes it make total sense I just think with it being my first pregnancy I didn't really know what it was when she told me today, and I thought the midwives might have mentioned that I might not feel the movements as strongly or as quickly with having this.. but yeah if it's not cause for concern and a lot of woman have it then I guess that's why they didn't feel it was necessary to tell me.
I appreciate it, thank you everyone 😊

I don’t think the NHS would normally tell you unless there was an issue with placenta placement. I only know because I asked, and the fact that the ultra sound tech at my 12 weeks scan said it was harder to see baby because of it lol
So unless it’s placenta previa etc they don’t tend to say

I have an anterior placenta and its 100% normal :) whether your placenta is in the front (anterior) or back (posterior) doesn’t matter, as long as the placenta isn’t covering down low on the cervix. Anterior placenta just takes longer to feel babys kicks

Avatar

I also have an anterior placenta, I wasn’t told at any of my NHS scans but was told at my private scan at around 16 weeks. I did then have to ask at my 20 week scan with NHS as they don’t seem to tell you which I think they should anyway even if it’s not an issue x

Avatar

I didn't get verbally told about my anterior placenta at my 20 week scan, but I did see 'high anterior placenta' written on my scan notes. I had a private scan at 16 weeks and wasn't told then either!

Avatar

I have anterior placenta and also wasn’t told about it, I just read it on my scan notes! No one has ever mentioned it to me in person!

Avatar

I think they only see it as a potential issue if it's low lying which yours is unlikely to be as they would ask you to go back for NHS scans to check it's not moved so low down that it's covering cervix as you get further along. Other than that, I don't think it matter where the placenta is for medical reasons which is probably why they havnt mentioned it. Just makes photos more difficult sometimes.

I only read that on my GP scan note on patient app x

Avatar

I got told at my 12 week and 20’week scans. Should be in your notes too x

Avatar

I wasn’t told either , I just noticed it on my badger app. I had been worrying as I hadn’t felt any movement at 20 weeks but apparently it’s common with an anterior placenta/ nobody told me either 😓

Avatar

I was told I have an anterior placenta at my 20w scan

Avatar

I have an anterior placenta but found out after reading the notes from the 20 week scan and then at my midwife appointment she went over it with me.

Avatar

I have had a look and there's nothing at all in my notes which says I have an anterior placenta, which I find even more strange

Avatar

It’s a normally situated placenta and isn’t a cause for concern. It will be on your scan notes though

I had a private scan earlier on in my pregnancy and that’s the only way I would have knew. NHS didn’t say anything, I’m glad I knew earlier as I didn’t feel any kicks or anything till I was like 18 weeks.

Induction?

Anyone been induced before? Was it more painful? Better than thought? Worse than thought? Worth it? Thoughts?

Induction or c section?

As a last resort, would you rather be induced or have a planned c section?

Really not liking the thought of being induced from people’s experiences I’ve read!

Almost 37 weeks + told to do another growth scan

I just had my second to last doctor’s appointment this morning, and my OB told me she wants me to do another growth scan because my belly is measuring small. She says it’s probably just because I’m a smaller woman, but they like to be safe. It’s hard to hear though, since I just did one a couple months ago.

I did this with my firstborn around this time of pregnancy, so I do think I just carry smaller (even though I don’t feel like I look “small” at all). My first baby was 6lbs 15oz when she was born at 41 weeks + 2 days. I’m having this baby at 39 weeks on April 7. I hope she’s still at least 6lbs.

Anyone have any stories similar to this?
