Reflux Sleep

How are we putting our reflux babies to sleep? My little one is currently on omeprazol and we are using anti reflux formula but still he is in discomfort every time I try and put him down. We keep him elevated after feeds for 20-30 mins and have raised his cot on one side but still I can hear him regurgitating once we lay him down which wakes him up. This happens even hours after eating. Neither he nor us are getting much sleep :( I

Anyway you can prop the mattress up a bit more so baby isn’t laying completely flat x

@Julia thanks for responding! We have already done this :( nothing seems to help and it’s really starting to take a toll on my mental health x

@Gunes What milk is he on? And I’m shocked that the doctor has prescribed omeprazole at such a young age. They don’t usually do it till a few months old but also omeprazole only helps to relieve the pain from the reflux and doesn’t actually stop it from happening. He might be better on a different formula and carobel as you can decide how thick you want the milk x

Heya I literally feed my baby in the baby carrier so she’s completely upright. Also reflux pillow could help. How old is your baby, it might be worth speaking to the doctor about early weaning, as we did it for my daughter and it’s made a massive improvement. X

We are in the same boat, currently my LO is sleeping on my chest overnight as this is the only way either of us can get any sleep! Would love to see if anyone else has anything that works as I’m unable to put him down for naps either

@Julia I know, he’s only 8 weeks old and has been on it since 5 weeks. It’s in tablet form too and not even the liquid form so it’s a pain trying to administer it. He’s currently on Aptamil Anti Reflux - we tried Kendamil with Carobel and that didnt seem to sit well with him. I feel like I’ve literally tried everything! Thanks anyway x

@Cee 🦄 Heya :) I think I am going to have to resort to a reflux pillow but I get worried about his posture. He’s 8 weeks today so still a while I guess before he can start weaning :( thanks so much!

@Cherrie hopefully we will find a solution to all of this. We are currently waiting for a referral to the paediatrician so we will see what comes from that. Keep pushing your GP if you can. It’s not fair that our poor little ones are left to deal with so much pain and discomfort. Sending you lots of love and wishing you all the best x

@Gunes Why don’t you try either cow and gate or HIPPA normal milk and use carobel in that? As Kendamil is a very rich milk already and I feel like it’s already a bit thicker than normal milk due to how rich it is. If not it maybe worth asking the doctor for a hypoallergenic/hydrolysed formula (that’s if he’s got other symptoms along side of reflux as reflux is usually a sign of something else like a cows milk allergy) and get gaviscon instead of the omeprazole. If the anti reflux milk isn’t working and neither did the carobel it could be due to a allergy to the milk as the body will be trying to get rid of it by bringing it back up constantly. Pop me a message if you’d like as I’ve been had a horrendous time with my little girls reflux which was caused by allergies x

@Gunes (sharing not as advice but as information for you) in the end we put our baby to sleep on his left side, and would rotisserie him from side to side. I know it’s not the recommended advice but he/we couldn’t sleep otherwise. I would roll a towel up against his back or place him against the side of his Moses basket so he couldn’t go on his back and it helped us so much. He’s now nearly 9 months and has completely outgrown it so there is light at the end for the tunnel. So hard, you’re doing really well.

Also, we tried loads of formulas. He did better on a cmpa milk definitely, but we have transitioned him to cow and gate comfort milk. You can get in any big supermarket. It’s partially hydrolysed whey so it’s already broken down and easier for them to digest. He’s had no issues on it at all

Sorry to msg again, I just know how hard it is. I found anti reflux helped in the sense of he wasn’t bringing the milk back up cuz it was thicker, but he was in loads of discomfort as if his body was trying to be sick but couldn’t 😢 then we switched to cmpa milk and the nightly noises calmed down loads. I think a good bridge between the two would be cow and gate comfort- it’s also slightly thicker so helps reflux in that way too. I really hope this helps it’s such a hard place to be 😢❤️

@Katherine thanks so much! My mum suggested this too but I get so anxious. We are already having to go against “safe sleep” by Co-sleeping as safely as possible with him elevated so we may have to give this a go too - at least he would be in his own space this way. It’s all so scary with everything that’s out there about SIDs - really think I’m suffering with PPA sometimes. Can’t wait to see the back of these days! Glad that your little one is doing much better now! 🥰

@Gunes I felt exactly the same, they hammer ‘safe sleep’ into you don’t they, but then all of a sudden recommend the opposite when you have a reflux baby 🙄 looking back I def had ppa, and I’m not surprised if you aren’t getting much sleep and worrying about baby! Completely expected! So what feels right, but you will come through. Also weaning early helped us because by the time he was 6 months he was eating well. Porridge in the morning is a gamechanger 👌👌 if you need anything give me a shout

Hey you can give him Gaviscon an hour after Omeprazole also I think you should defo push for liquid Omeprazole. I’ll link the reflux pillow below for ease. https://ebebek.co.uk/products/ebebek-baby-plus-baby-eco-reflux-wedge-pillow?gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAApD2sjuHeKZyUcxmmOmo6xVTs3K0f&gclid=Cj0KCQjwo8S3BhDeARIsAFRmkOMXef9undpNWr5Uzg76tgg8lVpBX0g99fvGq3l2z2-MzaXHTFIGkBkaAn4fEALw_wcB https://ebebek.co.uk/products/baby-plus-mother-side-baby-reflux-bed-dandelion?gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAApD2sjuHeKZyUcxmmOmo6xVTs3K0f&gclid=Cj0KCQjwo8S3BhDeARIsAFRmkONTBbHsVuqMC4indEnbF6ytdIS5u5r7VXQGkGlEAlSgNeLfFpy7iIgaAjRREALw_wcB I used the first one. Honestly I can’t recommending feeding upright enough either it does make a difference. Hope it all goes well xx

My 6 week old baby is exactly the same. On neocate and omeprazole and just been prescribed carobel. 2 hours after a feed and keeping him upright the whole time I think I'm safe to lie him down but within 20 minutes he's squirming, tongue out and woken himself up like he's on fire. Can't get him to lie flat or even at an angle so he's upright 24/7 and although he's doing well otherwise, we're all really struggling to cope.

@Pritha I’m so sorry to hear this 😔 it’s so hard isn’t it and definitely takes a toll on us too. I just pray for one night where he’s not in discomfort and can sleep peacefully. We still haven’t found a solution but have an appointment with the paediatrician at the hospital on the 14th so we’ll see how it goes. Little one has been struggle to take the omeprazole too. Do you feel like it wears off by night time? X
