So my LO has been sleeping in a travel cot for a bout 2 - 3 weeks as he is too big for the next to me cot. The travel cot is brand new and I stupidly never thought of buying an additional mattress for it. Today someone was shocked to hear that my baby was sleeping in a travel cot and it hit me… I feel so awful for not even thinking this is not good for his physical development.. I am now looking online to buy a proper cot and mattress but I can’t stop crying, this is a terrible thing I have done and I wonder if anyone has had a similar experience 😢😢😢

Was he sleeping?

An extra mattress in a travel isn’t a ‘must’ or the world will end situation.
The way I see it is that your baby would tell you he is uncomfortable by disturbed sleep or fidgeting etc.
My daughter sleeps at my parents in a travel cot and we said we’d see how she went without an extra mattress, she sleeps for 10/11 hours overnight there without a problem so she’s obviously not uncomfortable 🤷♀️
Don’t let other people cloud your decisions x
Thanks - His sleep has been disrupted but I have been blaming teething and sleep regression 😫 he is 4 months old

Most travel cots shouldn't be used with additional mattresses. They're a hazard. My youngest never had a 'proper cot' we always just used a travel cot and the thin mattress till she went in a bed at age 2

You’re actually using it correctly right now. Adding a mattress that didn’t come with it isn’t safe.

Honestly you are not a terrible mum at all. I don’t know if your travel cot it suitable for permanent sleeping but as other have said, they are safer without an extra mattress. If you went on holiday for two or three weeks, that exactly where you baby would sleep, whoever made you feel bad, should keep their comments to themselves x
Thanks all for your comments - it’s more like should I be putting him in that for every day sleeping which isn’t recommended apparently x

Why wouldn’t it be recommended, is it not a safe sleep space? As long as it’s a safe sleep space and your child fits within the safe limits of being able to use it (weight, height and sometimes milestones like rolling or pulling up, depending on the product), you’re not doing anything wrong using it for sleep. Just double check the manual.

It’s fine! What would you do if you went on a 2 week holiday! Don’t worry. People love making others feel bad. Some people if poor wealth don’t have luxury of next to me etc and just make do xxx

My little boy sleeps in a travel cot everytime he goes to stay at his grandmothers which is once a week. I don’t see the issue, don’t worry xx

Mine slept in a travel cot from 6m to 11m 🤷♀️

An extra mattress isn’t a necessity you have not done him any harm. I am a health visitor and would have no issue with this. We are going away this week and my baby will be in one all week with no extra mattress. Don’t beat yourself up and don’t panic about buying a new cot
