My LO is 3 weeks old and he basically doesn't nap during the day 😩 He usually sleeps a bit after lunchtime (anything between 30 mins and 2h) but otherwise he just fights sleep all day. He does sleep at night, although still short stretches. The whole day is so hard! I was prepared to do contact naps, I was definitely not prepared to have him awake all the time. He's too young to entertain himself with toys etc, so it's just me holding him and him being fussy/staring at me. Every now and then he gets sleepy, but it doesn't last long, I walk around for 20 minutes just for him to open his eyes again.
He also doesn't seem to like the carrier/swing, at least when I use it (he settles better with dad).
I'm crying half of the time because I just want him to sleep for a bit so I can either sleep as well or do something.
Anybody else in the same situation? How are you coping?

It’s very unusual for a baby that age, could it be worth getting a doctor to check whether there’s anything stopping him sleeping?
In the meantime, when you need to get things done would he let you pop him in a Moses basket or pram at all, or does he want to be held the whole time?
Is there anyone you can ask to help you out?

My LG didn’t really nap in the day at this age either and I was breastfeeding so it was just SO exhausting. Around 6 weeks she got better but not long stretches or any sort of routine. She did sleep amazingly in the car or on walks so I literally just went out all the time. I know you’re not technically resting but just to not hold them and tend to them is enough. Once she started rolling around 3 months her naps in the day were better with 2 hour wake windows and 1 hour naps. Hang on in there!

Mine has been like this for a few weeks. Awake pretty much all day. You're not alone!

It can be a very draining and challenging time, I use this time to enjoy and connect with my baby e.g. cook, listen to music, read books, go for walks and talk to him about the world. Have you tired different carriers and chairs?

Mine was like that at that age, too. I asked the doctors about it, and i was told that because he was growing fine, he was getting enough sleep at night.
It will pass! At about 6-8 weeks, he started napping during the day.
To get things done, do you have a carrier you can put the baby in?

My LO went through similar phase at 4 weeks and it lasted around a month. I used a sling/carrier to make her sleep and it was the only thing that helped. I know how draining it is, hang on in there!

How long is it between him waking and you trying a nap?

@Sophie if I put him down and he's not asleep, he will just cry 🙈 my husband WFH but of course he can't be there all the time, fortunately my parents are coming over for a few days so at least they will hold him a bit

he sleeps in the car, but not on walks 😩 I'm fine if he only sleeps an hour, if I could have that!

@Katherine we have a proper carrier and a fabric one, he does settle in the carrier but only with dad, I've managed to settle him in the swing a couple of times, but he mostly just fusses and he hates having the fabric over his head 🙈

@Natalie I've tried any time he looks sleepy/calm, also tried to follow the recommended wake window of 1h, but I can't get past the sleepy stage. Any time I think he's falling asleep, he opens his eyes

in terms of the carrier you mentioned baby doesn't like having the fabric over his head. There should never be fabric over babies head if it's being worn correctly. May be worth a fit check on that.
Do you start trying at the 1hr mark, if so that's too late into it. The wake windows would end at that point so I'd try 10-15 minutes before to get him to sleep. Opening eyes doesn't mean they won't fall asleep if you continue. Sometimes they like to have one more check before keeping them closed (my daughter still does this at 2)

@Natalie sorry, with over the head I mean behind it to hold it up, he just doesn't like the fabric to touch his head at all, but then I have to hold it myself as he keeps bouncing!
It was a few minutes before the hour mark, I can try a bit earlier, but after he reopens his eyes it doesn't take long before he gets fussy again.

@Sara yes, I have both! He fights it most of the times

I could have wrote this myself, I was in the exact same situation a few weeks ago. My little one is 7 weeks now.
I found that I had to walk around holding him tucked into me close and sing something repetitive whilst pacing and bouncing around the house. He'd then fall asleep, but it took a while, as long as he was full already. He'd literally go from screaming one minute to suddenly being completely out.
He still doesn't stay asleep for long now but I take him out in the baby carrier for a walk if he won't go down for a nap from either breastfeeding, patting him, white noise or all the above. Sometimes it can be 10-15 mins of intense screaming before he's asleep but then if I go out a good hour, at least he's had 45 mins of sleep.
It's so difficult but from what I've been told, it will get better. X

I find the walking around so difficult when I'm so tired, but I guess I'll just persevere and hope for the best!

yeah it is really hard. I just had to get into a headspace of doing it. Then when he was asleep, I could sit down at times and enjoy the peace without the crying. I see it as them developing so quickly they don't know how to cope with the changes. Hope it gets better soon, but you aren't alone in it xx

fabric should only go to the nape of babies neck and no higher. If the position is correct their head shouldn't bounce. Need a nice deep m shape and back in a J shape to encourage their head to lean onto your chest.
