Breastfeeding

Are there any other breastfed babies who are still taking an age to feed? I’ve heard they are supposed to get more efficient as they get older but my little boy is still averaging about 30 mins per feed and breastfeeding is taking up about 5 hours of my day!

He had his tongue tie snipped and it’s been checked and fully healed so that’s not an issue. I’m pretty sure I have a good supply (seen a lactation consultant a while ago who thought I did, I get a normal amount when I pump and baby always seems content between feeds/is gaining weight) but could I have a slow milk flow? Is he just staying on there for comfort and suckling? 😂

I love the bonding time of course but it’s also taking away from other parts of our day and not leaving a lot of time for everything else…

Mine is the same!! Xxx

From information I’ve been had from feeding consultant etc, anything up to around 40 mins per feed is normal, and baby might be around 6 months old when they start to get a bit shorter!

Mine was very efficient and this last week he had gone back to taking ages. May be a growth spur

So helpful thanks everybody!

My daughter (16 weeks) takes around 30mins too, although never actually seems to stop cos she's full! She either dozes off or I stop her because we have somewhere to be! She seems to feed more efficiently when sleepy, but gets very distracted in the daytime at the moment! She also feeds every 1-2 hours so not much time for anything else!

My first baby would’ve fed for 30-45 minutes nearly single feed up until he was a year old! It would’ve been shorter if he was distracted while we were out. My second baby only feeds between 5-10 minutes! It’s completely dependent on the baby, I wouldn’t worry too much about how much he’s getting. But if it’s affecting your day, try taking him off once you cant hear him gulping anymore? May shorten the feeds a bit for you!

When do things get easier?

As we entered the 9-12 month stage, my son started crawling and pulling himself up. He also became more clingy and does not play alone, still doesnt sleep through the night, and this week has been sick (so EVERYTHING amplified). I am tired and overwhelmed. Please lie and tell me things get better. 🥺

Colostrum storing?

Has anyone successfully extracted colostrum before the baby’s born? Apparently it gets produced from 16w pregnant and you can start storing it in the freezer but I’m 34w looking at my nipples and the syringes on amazon wondering how it works?? Like what did you use and did it hurt? 🥲

Self settling

Any tips or advice of how to teach 6.5month old to self settle? I’m up multiple times in the night to cuddle her back to sleep and put the dummy in. I understand she will wake up and want a cuddle etc but any tips on self settling would be appreciated 🥰

Baby losing weight

Hi all, it's been a long time since I had a baby (my son is 15!). My daughter is 10 days old and was 9lb born, she has since lost weight at every appointment and is at a 12% loss. I am breast feeding every two hours for over an hour and topping her up every feed. I pump and can get 60ml in 10 minutes so I know my supply is okay. Anyone had this before? Can give me some tips? I currently feel like I'm letting my baby down.

Breastfeeding

Does it ever feel better? The actual feeding part of it is going really well and baby boy is growing so well. I’m struggling with how my boobs feel day to day - it’s really getting me down most days. The let downs make me feel awful and sounds silly but, I am also really missing not wearing a bra! 9 weeks postpartum and still getting fairly engorged, even with comfort pumping.

Any advice or just shared stories would help. I’m so torn between carrying on because I enjoy the feeding side of it or switching to formula.
