My son is 4 years old and is Autistic, he struggles to go to bed at a decent hour and even when he manages to fall asleep early he will wake up at 1 or 2 am ready for the day. He can wake up early and go all day and night without getting tired or sleepy. I tried giving him children’s melatonin but I only give him half of a half and it will usually help and he will get a good nights rest. Has anyone had to do this as well?? I feel bad using it for him but I feel worse when he does not sleep and irritable.

My son has slept terrible since he was an infant and he goes all day and can go all night just like your son. And when he finally would fall asleep he was so so so restless. He would talk, yell, kick and move so much and he wouldn't be rested. We talked to our doctor and she said children's melatonin was safe for his age and he could have up to 3mg. We give our son 2 and it has made such a huge difference.
That makes me feel a little better. I just hate giving it to him but if I don’t he wont rest.

I completely understand. Me and my husband felt the exact same way. We felt like we were drugging him to sleep. But melatonin is natural and some people just don't produce enough of it and they need to take more. He rests so much better now and is in such a better mood when he wakes up.

My oldest was a terrible sleeper, had night terrors for years, dr recommend we could use melatonin to "reset" her schedule. She recommend to us only use for 2 weeks. While yes, melatonin is natural, for some, it can cause sleep disturbances in some, like myself. I cannot take it as it causes me to have worse sleep and horrible vivid dreams. Instead I prefer magnesium, for kids olly makes chillax, that one helped my children are lot as well. Just be sure to brush his teeth before bed to prevent cavities, if you choose to go that route.
