How long does a breastfeeding session take for you

A question for the breastfeeding mums, how long does each session take for you? My 8 week old takes over 45mins sometimes and I don't know whether or not to be concerned that he's still taking so long to feed

Opposite concern to you- my daughter is almost 8 weeks old and she feeds anywhere between 5-15 mins. Most of the time it’s around 7 mins every couple hours in the day and every hour in the evening before her first “long” sleep. I feel like it’s too quick! But she is gaining weight well so 🤷🏽‍♀️

Also got an 8 week old and she feed around 10-20 minutes every 1.5-2hrs in day and every 3hrs at night

Avatar

mine same take small feed but more frequently

Avatar

she can empty both of them in 5 min

Avatar

how do you know when to take them off or when the feed has finished? Not sure if I'm doing something wrong xx

Avatar

I just wait for her to come off. She takes herself off 99% of the time. On the odd occasion, I know she’s fallen asleep completely and I’ll just move back a bit and she’ll just let the breast fall out of her mouth. When you try to move off, does your baby suckle harder like they want to stay on? In which case, they’re still feeding! If not, they’re asleep and the feed is over.

Does he fall asleep when feeding? My girl does quite a lot and tend to notice that she is trying to just comfort after a certain amount of time. She stops swallowing and takes less of my breast in her mouth.

Avatar

@Ash sometimes he comes off himself but then i put him back on and he carries on feeding so I don't trust that he's full whenever he "comes off", and yeah whenever I try to move him when i think he's asleep he'll start suckling harder

Avatar

he does but when I go to move him he starts actively feeding again and sucking harder which confuses me!

Avatar

@Lizzy at the start I can tell hes actively feeding because he's sucking and swallowing but that only lasts a few minutes and then he just sucks and I dont see as many swallows, but when i go to move him off he starts sucking harder again. Not sure if i just have low supply because he still acts hungry even after feedings :(

Avatar

@Ash my baby is the same, and I was concerned she is not eating enough, so we got a scale for home, weighed before and after feed and it seems she eats 70-100ml in 5-10 minutes, so I guess she is just efficient :)

Avatar

oh that’s a good idea! We got baby scales and just weigh weekly to plot in her red book. Didn’t think to use for how much she drinks in a feed! Does that mean the scales show a 100g increase after a feed? That’s crazy considering they put on about 200g a week!

If it helps at all my 7 week baby will feed anywhere from 5 minutes to sometimes up to 90 minutes in one session, depends on if he falls asleep or has slept for a long time, tend to get the longer and more regular feeds in the evening. I always feed until he unlatches himself. My health visitor said the difference in time can be the milk coming out quickly or slowly or I’ve noticed he can have a lazy/shallow latch which means he’s taking in less

Avatar

My little girl is the same, especially at night, about 45 minutes sometimes longer before bed!

Avatar

My 8 week old feeds for 20 minutes, sometimes when it's hot will do 5-10 minute "drink", but actual feeds every 2-3 hours in the day for 20 minutes and goes slightly longer between feeds at night. It's so hard to know what they're getting isn't it. I'd love to weigh before and after out of curiosity but don't want a scale taking up space along with all the other stuff we seem to have acquired!!

Avatar

thanks! I tried weighing before and after feed and discovered I fed 120ml! Never knew how much I was making before (as I don’t pump). Thanks for the tip!

Vanilla extract

Has anyone used alcohol free vanilla in their babies formal to help them drink?
I’m 100% sure my baby refuses her bottles as she doesn’t like the taste of it!

Just anxious to try it, don’t want her to get used to it and then refuse bottles again after two weeks of using (correct me if I’m wrong but I’ve read you use it for 2 weeks max)

TIA 🙂

Car seat crying

My 6 month old PANICS the second I put him in a car seat and screams, cries, chokes and recently even projectile vomited on a 14 minute drive. It’s gotten to the point I don’t even bring him out unless it’s to a doctors appointment. I’m a stay at home mom with no family in my state and it has been very isolating. We’ve tried 3 different car seats with no improvement. Has anyone had a baby who hated the car seat? Any advice? This started at 3 months. I will add it does seem worse when he’s tired. He does cry on every trip though. He only contact naps and co sleeps so he reaches for me and will not sleep in the car seat.

Sex post C section

Hi ladies I’m 4 weeks 5 days postpartum and I had a C section. I’m not bleeding properly anymore just some brownish discharge stuff that starts on and off. I’d like to do the deed with my partner; is it okay to do so or shall I wait the full 6 weeks. I feel up for it but also worried because the advice is 6-8 weeks.

When did you circumcise your baby?
If you DID NOT or DO NOT have a circumcised son DO NOT comment this post is not for you!

Did you wait a certain amount of time or have it done immediately?
Again respectfully, this is only for the parents who choose to do so.
opinions about how not necessary it is will not be appropriate for this post. Thank you in advance. 🩵
