Need some advice, moms!
My baby girl (born 1st April) is almost 5 months now. Her daytime naps are short but manageable — she usually settles after 10–15 mins of fussing. The real struggle is bedtime. We start her routine around 7 pm, she falls asleep, but then wakes after 20–40 mins. From there, it can take almost 2 hours of repeated rocking, feeding, and putting her back in the crib before she finally settles.
For the past 3 weeks I’ve been trying to leave her for 1–2 minutes and pat her in the crib to help her self-soothe, but it hasn’t worked once — she only calms if I pick her up, and then we repeat the cycle again. Earlier in July she was giving me 5-hour stretches at night, but since mid-July (with the regression + earlier bedtime), she’s waking much more often.
Is anyone else going through this? How did you manage bedtime false starts and constant night waking at this stage? Any tips would be amazing 🙏

Yes, we are having false starts but nothing is working except when sometimes her bedtime falls late, say 10.30 then sometimes she doesn't wake up. Anecdotally I've read that for lots of people false starts disappeared around 6 months. Not sure why though!

The 2 hours is basically the wake window so it seems like our babies are treating it as a nap. The most successful strategy for us was to keep her awake before bed time for 3 hours and then when she wakes, she is so tired sometimes it only takes 10 mins to resettle. But it hasn't worked 100% of the time.
It’s taking a toll on me as most of the time I am the only one who is with her and settles her, just hoping this to pass soon 🤞🏻

Oh lovely, I'm sorry to hear that! I had to rope in my partner, are you able to do that? The other thing that really helped me mentally was that if the baby isn't asleep in 10-15mins after a false start, I just put her on the bed and play with her (rather than keep rocking her for the next 1/2 hours) until she starts fussing and then I try again. That way I lose much less energy rocking her. Worst case scenario, we get to 1.5h / 2h mark and then she falls asleep in 10 mins and stays asleep.
Thanks a lot for sharing this I’ll try some of this from tomorrow, he is there but is not of much help he was not doing this from start so once in a while she’ll sleep with him otherwise I have to come and be there 😒

I know how frustrating this is and know that you are doing so great. I used to get super frustrated expecting my baby not to wake up and honestly I saved a lot of energy just accepting that it is what it is and try to get sleep whenever I could. I would encourage you to try to get your partner to help. Mine was the same as yours - was green and at first more stress than doing it myself but now he's learnt his tricks too so he stays awake longer to deal with false starts and then I deal with her waking up for milk later on at night and he sleeps in a little bit in the morning too. It was a game changer for me because it felt so lonely before and now I'm feeling like we are on the same team and that not all responsibility is on me felt like a big weight off my shoulder, and it brought us closer together - now we are sharing strategies and what worked for us with each other. Just a thought :)

Yes going through it but I would say just let go of the idea of how you want it to be and accept everything is just a phase… as difficult as it is. It will pass eventually.
Our babies are still very young & need to be close to us to self-soothe
They do not know how to do this themselves just yet
