I keep seeing these horror stories about IEP and parents fighting with the staff. What happens? I have my first one coming up and I’m scared. Are they not giving enough support? Or are they just throwing them in a class and not helping. I’m confused can someone tell me their story and any tips that I should ask for my son is speech delayed and has trouble holding conversations and he pushes and scratches teacher and students for “no apparent reason” but in reality it’s because he can’t communicate his needs (I’m not defending his actions) also he doesn’t know how to play with others that isn’t immediate family.

I’m a former special education teacher. See if you can get a parent liaison if you’re worried. It definitely is going to depend a lot on the state/district and the IEP team at your school. There’s a lot of amazing IEP teams and IEPs but I’ve also gotten IEPs from other places that are terrible. There should be no opinions or statements, only information that can be backed up by data. A behavior always has a reason and it’s their job to figure it out and make accommodations and goals and to change or replace the behavior. You might be able to request a draft of the IEP before the meeting that you can look over or have someone else look over. If not and they don’t go through it thoroughly and you want to look over it at home you can request another meeting after you review. Ask them to send you a copy of your procedural safeguards or parental rights handbook and make sure you know your rights. I really hope you end up with great team!
Thank you 🫶🏼
