The law I'm the state I live in said they have to be at least 2 years old to switch to forward facing in their car seats. Now that our son is 2 my husband has said we can switch him over and wants to do so for his car, since the backseat isn't too big and his seat is tight against the passenger front seat. I don't want to switch him yet, and there's still plenty of room in my car between his car seat and the front seats.
Has anyone switched their LO to forward facing, or planning to soon?
And would it be too confusing if we switch his seat in one car and not the other?

Mines 2 and he’s forward facing!!

I think it depends on the weight of the child. I got pulled over once and they told me 40 lbs.

I switched my older two kids between 3-4 years old. Planning the same with my son! Just because it's the minimum legally, doesn't mean it's the safest. Safest practice is to max out height/weight of the carseat before switching to the next step.

Personally I have a 2yo he’s 25lbs he will not be forward facing until he is 30+ lbs and his knees are touching the Bach head rest of the back seat

I've heard that they should be 30 lbs before you switch them. However, I have a 3.5 year old that is only barely 29 lbs, so he would still be rear facing. I think I switched him around 2.5-3 years. My friend kept her girl rear facing until she was like, 5 though. So it's really up to you (or the laws where you live) after 2 years old.

We’re not yet able to switch ourselves but I wonder if switching in one would make staying rear facing in the other harder? I’d be curious how that goes for you because the car seat we use is tighter in one car than the other just like your situation.

I have a 25 month old who is front facing. She is 30 pounds and 2 1/2 feet. Her legs are so long. Height does matter though!

What is the limit on the car seat? We will have to switch my daughter in the next 6 months because she’s super tall.

It is recommended to wait as long as possible. I have a car seat that allows up to 50 lbs rear-facing. It might be more convenient, but reality is their little bodies are still not strong enough to withstand force while forward-facing in case of an accident, even if still in the car seat. As one pediatrician put it, it is much easier to fix fractured legs from being rear-facing than broken spines or worse from being forward-facing too soon. You should do your own research as well, rather than following what other people are doing that might not be as informed.

I’m waiting till my daughter hits the max weight/hight for rear facing in her seat before I turn her around cause they’re safer rear facing in an accident. My daughter’s 25ish lbs and my seat maxes out at 40, so we’ll be rear facing for a while.

My car, 4yrs we switched. His car, he was FF at age 2 but that’s because hubby has a low sports car his bucket seats go right back and leave no room for the baby at all but that’s a weekend occasional car, baby is in my car 90% of the time we take his car on weekends only. So 4. His carseat now goes to 8yrs so he’ll be in that till 8yrs, it’s a 4-8yr harnessed booster. And his baby seat was a 0-4yr old RF one (before we switched him FF) we didn’t use an infant seat/system it stayed in the car.

My son is 30lbs but we aren’t turning him yet. We will reassess at 2.5

I am waiting as long as possible to switch my LO my understanding is it is almost always safer to keep them rear facing as long as you can/ they max out the rear facing height or weight

My guy is 24.5 months and he’s 35lb and 38 inches. He started to forward face when I had my daughter in July. That made him about 21 months. He was 37 inches and 31lbs at the time. Trust your gut. It depends kid to kid.

My 2 and 4 year old are both rear facing. They'll switch when they max out either the height or weight limit. My 4 year old is a skinny little thing, so if she hasn't met those requirements by kindergarten, I'll still switch her then.

My sister n is 25 months and 38lbs he is forward facing as his car seat goes up to 35 lbs rear facing.
