Hi there. My 3 yr old just recently started covering his ears. From what I’ve noticed is he’s doing it on purpose. Does it at school his teacher told me he’s doing it because he doesn’t want to listen and it’s normal toddler behavior. I think he does it too when he’s excited about something. He’s non verbal and I seen him covering his ears when he doesn’t want to watch a show I turned on.
He was watching tom and Jerry and one of there scenes where there’s a b0mb going off he covers his ears. I’m just not sure because sometimes he’s laughing.
Does anyone have experience in this? I’d love some input, thanks!

My son does this. It’s a sensory thing I think. Like too much input is coming in so he covers his ears bc it helps him regulate without the sound. Almost like it helps him slow down and feel safe.

My son was around 3 when he started covering his ears frequently, as it happened more often, his behavior and ability to self regulate suffered, until I got him ear defenders. I have worn them, and he can still hear with them in, they just buffer against the highest highs and lowest lows, so his brain isn't constantly under assault from the environment around him. He went from 5+ meltdowns a day to >1.

I would try some ear defenders my LO loves his snug ones. Even if we have had a chaotic day at home he will sometimes ask me to make it quiet and will sit in his cosy corner with his headphones on x

My son is 3; he was diagnosed level 2 autism and also has speech delay. He does this in various situations and not always with noisy or loud environments. And he won’t wear the noise reduction headphones. I definitely think it’s a sensory thing but I’ve also been told that it’s can be normal for toddlers to do this.

My son does this too. It used to be sound related (he never would wear ear defenders) but ne does it far more often, excitement/anticipation! Like playing buckaroo and when he s getting ready for it to buck, he covers his ears!
