Hi, my baby has been feeding well using shields however the midwife told me it’s best to not use them, he’s had a couple successful feeds without but today he’s struggling with latch and it’s hard seeing him frustrated. I think he gives up too because he ends up just sleeping on my boob. I have flat nipples and baby is 11 days old. Any advice?

I used nipple shields as my daughter struggled to latch without as also had fairly flat nipples. She did have a tongue tie so getting that sorted helped. We weaned off them slowly but used them for 3 weeks or so. I also found it helped weaning off by using the nipple shield initially then taking it off and trying the rest of the feed without as the nipple shield helped to pull my nipples out a bit if that makes sense. I found she got more frustrated if she was really hungry

My baby used nipple shields til he was 2 months old and one day it just clicked and he never used them again. Cold turkey. I would just try to latch without the shields every time every day and if it doesn’t work, use the shields for as long as baby needs them.

I had inverted nipples so used them for the first few months, it took a couple of weeks to wean her off but I would always start with the shield on to help the nipple come out and also so that the immediate need was met and baby was settled then after a couple of minutes or so would slip it off

My son stopped using them around 3 months and just refused one day

We used them for a few weeks. I’d sometimes take them off mid feed, or get him to latch without at the start - even if he wouldn’t stay on long. We managed to wean off shields on one side first and then the other.
Just keep offering it without at different times of the day/positions etc.
There’s no real right or wrong just whatever tactic works for you best. 2 feeds today without it is brilliant!
My nip on one side was quite flat so I bought the medela nipple formers off Amazon and they really helped it poke it which made it easier for him to find it and latch x
Tbh they do scaremonger a bit. Some people use shields their whole BF journey without issue. If I didn’t use them then we definitely wouldn’t be breastfeeding now (11m in). The worry with them is that sometimes it can affect how baby pulls milk from the breast so can affect supply and/or babies weight gain
If baby’s putting on weight then don’t stress too much, just keep trying and one day it’ll click xx
