Traumatic birthing experience - venting

Hi ladies 🄰

I’m a FTM and had my baby in November. I found the entire experience quite traumatic and just want to vent in a safe place if possible.

I had a routine 36 week scan and that’s where it all went a bit wrong. They said my girl had dropped to the 16th percentile and I’d have to be induced bang on 37 weeks. I opted for the rods (didn’t work), then they broke my waters and gave me the gels, then had to stop the 2nd dose of gels as short staffed so couldn’t progress my labour even though I was having mild contractions. I restarted my gels on day 3, broke my waters again as there was fluid left behind, and put on the hormone drip. I made it to 6cm dilated before babies heart rate started to drop and before I knew it, I was being wheeled in for an emergency c-section. I had my girl at 37 + 4 weeks.

The next few days I’ve blacked out completely and can’t remember. My baby was in the NICU for days on oxygen, feeding tubes, antibiotics etc. and I don’t even remember meeting her. I was also on IV antibiotics and had to stay on a separate ward. Days later a midwife told me my placenta was sent off and positive for Strep B which is what my little girl had too.

Anyway, she’s now 7 weeks old, home and thankfully thriving ā¤ļø I was so traumatised that I told everyone, including my partner, that I was one and done. I’m still traumatised but I don’t feel our family is complete, but I’m terrified of childbirth again.

Anyone else been through similar and had a more positive experience 2nd time around?

Thanks for letting me get it off my chest šŸ«¶šŸ»

Strep B is awful and the lack of support in maternity is appalling. But please dont make decisions on having further babies yet.

Allow yourself time to heal .

Knowing you had strep B they will be more diligent next time around you will also have antibiotics whilst in labour and if you prefer you could always have a section.

But for now focus on you and baby. Processing the last few weeks and allowing your self time to heal and bond.

I'm sorry youve gone through this as a mamma who went through it too 18years ago I know exactly how yiu feel x

I fully agree strep B should be a standard test! I truly believe my first pregnancy went wrong and we spent a week in hospital because little man got an infection they couldn’t quite pin point! They even did a lumbar puncture at 2 days old😭

Second pregnancy I coincidentally went in as I thought my waters had broken early (they didn’t) turned out they found I had strep B, which if you have in one pregnancy is very common in the following! Baby 2 was born absolutely fine with no infections as antibiotics were administered at the right time!

It should be standard.

Induction?

Anyone been induced before? Was it more painful? Better than thought? Worse than thought? Worth it? Thoughts?

Induction or c section?

As a last resort, would you rather be induced or have a planned c section?

Really not liking the thought of being induced from people’s experiences I’ve read!

C section or natural?

I am a control freak and thinking c section is the least stressful route for me and baby… less complications during labour etc. whilst acknowledging recovering can be hard.
If it could be guaranteed no tearing or complications then I would opt for natural and kind of want to experience the feeling.
Then again could plan and go either way šŸ˜‚ arghh!
Anyone else in this predicament?

Homebirth?

I am thinking I want a homebirth (second baby) for a few different reasons but my husband is very against it, he is worried about things going wrong and we are a 30 minute drive from the hospital. Has anyone been in a similar position and what did you end up doing? Any advice? šŸ™
