How do I know if my breasts are getting empty. I am pumping and having to supplement with formula for some bottles. I am not sure if my boobs are getting empty when I pump. First thing in the morning my boobs have hard spots in the and after pumping those go away but my boobs still feel heavy. If ai continue pumping though I get nothing else out of them ir very little. The rest of my pumps through out the day I get very little output and again my breasts still feel heavy but nothing else comes out. Trying to get my supply up so we can stop supplementing but I am nearly 2 weeks pp and only getting around 6 ounces in total for the day if I am lucky.

Are you nursing at the breast or just pumping?

Be proud of those 6 ounces!!
How often do you pump, and for how long? To get mine up, I pumped every 2 hours for a full 30 minutes…this was when I was too weak to hold my baby and nurse. Around 5 weeks postpartum I stopped that and just fed from the boob and still do 5 months postpartum. Don’t skip pumps like 1-4 am!! Usually a larger amount of milk comes out. A lactation consultant told me to feed my baby from the breast since they’re better at emptying a boob than a pump, but to follow up breastfeeding with a 15 minute pump session to signal to your body to make more milk. Did this from 5 weeks postpartum to like 7 weeks. Now I only pump when away from my baby!

But yeah, for me that was normal for a while…low output from pumps early on postpartum. Never knowing if my breasts were empty either-for me, if mine felt heavy there was usually some left in there. Keep pumping frequently until you’re making whatever you consider to be “enough.” Lots of moms supplement in the beginning or even long term! Good luck, you’re already doing amazing!! Sending love!
