i know nhs guideline suggests 12 months but i'm sure babies dont need that up until then as we surely wouldnt be sterilising their spoons, plates etc at 6 months right?

I stopped at 6 months for precisely that reason, they have an immune system at this point .

My son is 1 on Friday, is constantly putting things in his mouth and we don't sterilise anything else. We stopped today

I stopped when they started moving around on their own. Figured there was no point since they would "crawl" around then put their hands in their mouth.

It's due to the formula not being sterile and it being a breeding ground for bacteria. Because cups, plates etc don't come into contact with formula we don't need to sterilise those 🙂

It's the formula. Infant formula can contain dangerous bacteria, particularly one called chronobacter, and sterilizing is a preventative measure. Once you stop using formula you don't need to anymore. I did any cups or spoons, etc that came into contact with formula (like in cereal) for the same reason.

Yeah bottles at 12 months / once you stop formula due to the specific bacteria as others have said. We often run dummies through still also when he’s poorly etc x

You need to sterilise for as long as you use formula. The NHS say 12 months because they recommend switching to cows milk or a milk alternative at that age, and stopping formula

@incog it is, but after it's sterilized it isn't contained in a sterile environment. Bottles, glass or plastic, can get scratches, and formula gets trapped in them over time, and regular washing won't get it out. Regular sterilization will keep any trapped bacteria from multiplying and contaminating the fresh formula.

I sterilised bottles up till we stopped using formula which was like a week before her 1st birthday. Never sterilised spoons etc when we started weaning

Yeah like a few others said, it’s because of the formula so we only sterilise bottles. We are due to stop formula over the next few weeks so we will stop sterilising then

You stop sterilising when you are not using formula anymore. Anything that comes into contact with formula needs to be sterilised due to the harmful bacteria. The 1 year mark is often mentioned because of the transition to cows milk. If you aren’t using formula no need to sterilise
