Am I overreacting?

Long story short, my husband and I purchased a bed when due to move in together after we got married. I went back when pregnant to look for another bed for the guest room and the man who served me the last time when I was with my husband was there again and he saw me (pregnant and looking at my bump) and he commented saying ‘how’s the bed, I can see you must be enjoying it’. I was on my own this time and shocked and just replied saying ‘ew that’s disgusting to comment’ and he laughed it off and that was it but since it happened a few weeks ago I keep thinking how inappropriate it was. I’m a conservative person so maybe I took more offence than someone else would.

I mean , he could have said “if it wasn’t soft enough to sleep on at least it was firm enough to do other things … now let’s find a sleeping mattress for you guys I just got a bunch new ones in “ Furniture people are like car sales man , they try to be funny and connecting . Yeah it’s tacky but it’s hard not for me to give these people a pass considering what a boring position they work all day

I think it's one thing if you were ok with that kind of humor and a friend made that joke, but it's not ok for a stranger to do that.

Avatar

I would say it’s inappropriate. I thinks it’s odd he would say something like that. He could’ve just said congratulations on the baby and kept it moving. Some people are different and would’ve found that funny, you weren’t one of em. Have you told your husband about this comment?

Avatar

I’m not a conservative person but that’s weird as fuck

If my friend said that to me I wouldn’t mind but it just feels very YUCK coming from a man you’ve met one time during a transaction and this time you were alone and he’s being weird. Major red flags for me I wouldn’t be going back alone. I don’t think I would report him or anything but I would not have liked it

We have been groomed by society to accept this as women. This is completely inappropriate and disgusting. I’d make a complaint because this is the only way to make certain men learn how their behaviour can affect women. Gross!

Avatar

If you had slapped him I would find that more than justifiable

Avatar

It was inappropriate because you shouldn't be saying things like that in an environment which is supposed to be a professional one.
If you and him were friends this would be different but his a sales person.
All he needed to say was congratulations with the baby if he wanted to bring up your pregnancy.

Avatar

Wouldn’t of bothered me , he wasn’t crude or rude …

Avatar

Definitely inappropriate to say to you alone but it may have been different if your husband was with you. Men have a different sense of humor. He was trying to be funny and break the ice but obviously wrong time and person.

Avatar

I’d find it completely disrespectful
Hate people like this, I’d be mortified

Showcasing personality is the pinnacle of commissioned based jobs . It’s a furniture store ….. super boring , if he’s saying it in an upbeat happy way instead of a creepy I’m visualizing you making a baby on that mattress I sold you right now constant eye contact way then yeah obviously so horribly inappropriate but other wise take it easy guy may be tacky but he’s certainly May not have been sexually overstepping verbal bounds

Avatar

Inappropriate for sure but I wouldn't hold on to it. Just find a different salesperson or a different store entirely

Avatar

I would go to a different store and not give them your business.

Avatar

I’d find it funny tbh but everyone’s got different humour

Avatar

This is disgusting and a smaller symptom of the everyday misogyny people act like is fine. He could have said *anything* else, and he chose to make a suggestive and highly inappropriate comment.

Avatar

Aww if it happened a few weeks ago and you're still dwelling on it, obviously it has affected you and you are well within your right to feel offended. Have you shared this with your husband? The sales guy may well have said it without thinking and will have thought about the exchange post event as well. Maybe your reaction will have jolted him into rethinking how he approaches this kind of situation in future ? So sorry, I would have felt so uncomfortable.. but my other half would have probably found it funny 🤷🏼‍♀️ I would draw a line under it as an unfortunate situation and if there is the option, possibly write a formal note to the company suggesting this as a learning opportunity. Don't let it take up headspace though ❤️

Avatar

I would complain to be honest. Thats disgusting

Avatar

If you felt a type of way about it after her made the comment i’d say its inappropriate as fuckkk. What you felt is what matters. If i was you i’d report to a manager as YOU felt it was inappropriate. Its unprofessional to make sex comments wtf ew

Avatar

WTF is wrong with people, what an inappropriate thing to say to a woman.

Avatar

Thats gross

Avatar

I think this is really inappropriate and I’d be mega uncomfortable. Maybe a friend could say this but not a salesman that’s gross

Avatar

Thanks ladies for all your perspectives. I did mention this to my husband who also found it to be an inappropriate and weird comment from a stranger. I understand some may have different humour and find it funny but I think for me, a random man of a well known bed store essentially commenting on my sexual life in what should be a professional environment, a step too far.

Avatar

Not a big deal, but definitely not appropriate. Unprofessional and rude.

It was like once I had my baby people got excited for about 2 weeks then fell off the face of the planet. So I’m looking to connect with other moms who are in a similar boat to me. I would love to get to know some of you!

Hey momma

Hey mommas if you ever need a friend or someone to just listen I will be here for you even at 3am. I’m a good listener and can give good advice. I can even just be an ear if you want to vent and it doesn’t have to even be about anything serious. I’m here for anyone who needs anyone cause I know what it feels like to be alone and like you have no one in your corner. And I will be in your corner if you need.
