I can’t be the only one who thinks this is a weird thing to say to a baby…

I was at the hairdressers yesterday, and I had my 16 week old son with me.

Hairdresser and one of her colleagues wanted to have a look and baby talked and cooed to him. Nothing wrong with that, but then they both said “you’re a wee flirt” and “are you flirting with me?”

…

I’m pretty sure it wasn’t meant literally as in they aren’t preds, however it juts rubs me off the wrong way.

Please tell me I’m not the only one who thinks this way of speaking is weird and uncomfortable…

Maybe it’s not something I’d say, but I don’t think there’s anything weird about it

Avatar

I personally don’t like it - same with people saying that little kids have boyfriends / girlfriends - but I think it’s just One Of Those Things that people say x

Avatar

I would have called it out and said "bit creepy to say about a baby, please don't make comments like that again". I think those types of comments are disgusting, babies and children don't flirt.

Avatar

It is weird — just like when they say ‘lock up your daughters’ creeps me out. Anyone that sexualises a child shouldn’t have or be around them. 😂😭

Avatar

That’s gross. People who sexualise children’s behaviour like that clearly have no idea of the lasting effect that can have on a child.

Avatar

People do say that, and I agree it’s creepy!

Avatar

I think it’s one of those things people say without thinking about it too much. I really don’t think it’s that deep or even that strangers are sexualising your child. They just mean He’s being charming and are using a bit weird terminology about it. It’s a bit outdated and will probably die out but people that say it generally don’t mean any harm. X

When my landlord met my baby for the first time, he bit his fist and said “oooo, she’s gonna drive the boys mad!”. I was so confused by the comment and I agree it’s just a weird thing old people say, but it’s still a bit creepy when you think about it.

It's just a thing people used to say all the time that doesn't land well in today's society. It's usually their way of saying the baby is cute. I don't care for it but most people mean it in a generally harmless way.

Avatar

So many people sexualize babies and kids without even knowing it. It's so weird to me. That also says a lot about the incestuous spirit that runs in many families. Lots of people grew up being sexualized by adults (lots of time their own parents and direct family) that they don't even realize it's not normal.

Avatar

not trying to jump in here, but I guess I am. From the comments, it was definitely you sexualising your own child. Just saying.

Avatar

I don’t think it’s wrong. It’s cute and funny I think.

Avatar

I think this is just harmless but I don’t blame you for being a bit concerned in this messed world.
This for sure is something that wasn’t meant to be weird In my opinion.
It’s the same as when a little boy might be surrounded by all his mums friends obsessing and someone says ‘ look he’s a little ladies man’ or ‘ he loves the ladies’.
It’s just a joke.
For me personally, I wouldn’t want someone joking like that in front of my child once they actually understand things though😅

Avatar

I plan on putting a huge halt to any comments like that tbh. People should be more conscious of the things they say. “I don’t mean it in that way” well the word has one meaning so maybe use a different one 🤷🏻‍♀️ people not being conscious of inappropriate behavior and speech doesn’t make it any less inappropriate.

I think in today's world with everything going on despite maybe someone being harmless or whatnot... We need to call people out or speak up when a comment makes us uncomfortable, whether it's a comment towards yourself, your children or maybe someone you are with. I don't think we should be constantly worried about being a people pleaser or "keeping quiet" because that's how things happen in the world and how things escalate or get buried. Just because someone else may accept it, doesn't mean we have to be followers and tiptoe around people's feelings. We are all individuals, we are all entitled to have our own feelings and we are all entitled to not be made to feel uncomfortable in ANY situation. I refuse to change my beliefs and morals just to appease others and I think we should all be entitled to that, it's our right 🤷🏼‍♀️ everything these days gets labelled as "aggressive" or "dramatic" when it's 100% okay to tell someone "hey sorry I really didn't like your comment as it made me feel uncomfortable".

Avatar

Also wanna add that part of the joke that people considered funny about comments like this was exactly what people are describing here - that obviously a baby can't flirt, ha ha, funny, like saying a dog or a cat is flirting with you, because most people get that obviously that is impossible, which is what made it funny to some people. No one actually said these things with the intent of sexualizing infants, the impossibility of it was part of the joke, and most people understood that. It just doesn't land well in today's societal context.

Times change, some people are just behind the times and some are too young to remember the context from 35 years ago.

People really need to get a life and stop this victimhood over everything 💀💀💀 it’s really not that deep, you’re making stuff up in your head

🙄 …. Literally, ridiculous people can’t say anything anymore without it being seen as malicious
This days you could literally say good morning to someone & they’d be offended or think your being malicious

I’ve given up being anonymous 😂

Hi mums, I’m really looking for some advice because I’m feeling angry and hurt.

I’m a first-time mum and my son is still very young. Over the past few months, things with my mother-in-law have become increasingly difficult. There have been hurtful comments towards me, criticism about my parenting, and issues with boundaries.

There was also an incident where my son was unwell and struggling with feeding. Instead of asking how he was or showing concern, we felt accused of lying or exaggerating the situation and keeping her away from him. That really hurt, especially as we were already worried and trying to do what was best for our baby.

My partner and I decided to take some space because the situation was affecting us as a family. I recently reached out to her myself because I genuinely wanted to try and talk things through calmly. I suggested meeting for a walk and having an honest conversation, but she ignored my message and instead called my partner while he was at work.

When he didn’t answer, she told him that if he didn’t answer, “this whole situation was going to get a whole lot worse” and that she had spoken to people who said she had a “high chance of winning.”

The thing that has really upset me is that she has previously told both me and my partner that she would take our son away from us. Hearing words like “winning” and “fighting for my grandson” has made me feel like my child is being used as a threat or a way to pressure us.

I completely understand that grandparents love their grandchildren and want to be involved, but I don’t believe a child should ever be used as leverage in adult disagreements. My partner and I just want a respectful relationship where boundaries are listened to.

At this point, I honestly feel like I don’t even want a relationship with her anymore. I feel like too much has been said and done, and I’m struggling to see how we move forward after feeling like my child has been used against us. Part of me feels like no contact is the only way I can protect my peace and focus on my little family.

Has anyone experienced anything similar with a family member? How did you handle it when someone brought your child into conflict or threatened to take them away? I’m just looking for advice and support because this has been really stressful.❤️

Sleep deprivation is killing me

My baby has never been a ‘good’ sleeper, longest stretch she’s done in 5 months is about 5 hours. But currently she seems to going through the 4 month sleep regression at 5 months? Shes also teething and I think that is making her even more restless, the longest we’re getting is about 2 hours then after midnight she’s up almost every hour. My partner gets up with her half the night but because she’s in the next to me I hear every moment/moan/cry. My brain feels like it’s melting. My patience for everything is wearing thin. Anyone else struggling and or been through this and is out the other side?
