Hi!
Can people share their stories with gestational diabetes, great meals/replacements and hacks?
I’ve been diagnosed tonight. Fasting levels were too high but my levels after the sugar drink were within ranges. Got a call with the diabetes clinic tomorrow but so nervous and probably won’t sleep tonight

I was shocked and quite devastated when I found out I had it but after a week of the dietary changes I adjusted. A hack I found was not eating rice/pasta when it was freshly cooked. I waited around 4-6hours after I cooked it to eat it and it didn’t affect my readings. However, different things spike different people, I know people that were fine with bread but I couldn’t eat it at all. You’ll be fine honestly, just keep in the back of your mind you’re doing it for your little one and that makes it more bearable. I lost quite a lot of weight too so that’s always a plus😂

There is a podcast episode of the Midwive's Cauldron about GD that will put your mind at rest. Basically talks about how the levels they give you in pregnancy are so much lower than a non-pregnant person. Made me less anxious about it.
With regards to diet...my midwife basically said, one carb per meal and max out on the protein. Lots of chicken and veg etc...

I was diagnosed with GD at 23 weeks. I found I could have wholemeal pasta, and brown rice just pair it with protein. I found that was the key, eating lots of protein and nuts were great too. I couldn't eat any cereal or milk and towards the end of pregnancy I couldn't tolerate bread. But different things spike different people. I could also eat sourdough pizza so that was good, lidl do a really good one 👌
You'll be fine, make a few adjustments to your diet and just think you're doing for your little one and it's worth it ❤️

I also was super shocked to be diagnosed with GD at around 25 weeks. I think I just cried for about a week straight but as Tiffany said, quickly got into a good rhythm and lost lots of weight! My main trigger was milk and oats so switched to almond milk and actually preferred it by the time I tried it again when I wasnt pregnant (although my little one has CMPA so im dairy free again anyway whilst im BF). Switched to whole wheat pasta and rice abd pretty much always had a side salad. Protein was the key though too and found i did really well adding cheese in ☺️ honeslty a few weeks into it itll just be routine and I found it ended up eating realy similar just made small changes to my diet and it was nice to have good structure when my little one was here! My husband was really on board too so we ate the same which really helped. You've got this mama x
Thank you everyone for your kind replies🥰🥰I feel so much more at ease reading the responses. I think I’ve just found it overwhelming to hear at first but feel a lot better now than what I did 4 hours ago! I have a meeting with the diabetic team tomorrow and then going to go do a food shop and surround myself with good food! Lots of love to you all and thank you again for all the support!🥰🩷

Honestly I was gutted when I was diagnosed but it’s not so bad, just takes a bit of adjusting! To begin with you’ll need to find out which foods spike you- for me it was things like sweet potatoes, white bread, rice, even when eaten with plenty of protein, so I’ve just made sure to avoid these foods until I give birth. Having babybels / ham / lentil and pea snack cakes as snacks has been a game changer too. I personally found breakfast challenging as I can’t have granola or oatmeal as it spikes me as well, even if it’s plain. I now tend to have sausages / bacon / eggs for breakfast and that’s been alright.
You just have to find your rhythm! I’ve had a few highs here and there, but have managed to keep things controlled with just diet since I’ve been diagnosed.
Occasionally if I’m really craving something sweet, I’ll have something but a very small portion / share with my hubs / go for a walk right after
