Hi everyone, Iām hoping to get a bit of advice or hear from other mums who may have been through something similar š¤
My daughter is currently under a hospital specialist for being underweight, and today we saw a new (first-year) doctor. He didnāt seem very confident, which already made me feel a bit uneasy.
During the appointment, he said she has gained some weight, which is great ā but I brought up a concern Iāve had for a while about possible diabetes, as she has quite a few symptoms and we have a strong family history of it.
They did a blood sugar test, and her level came back at 7.3 after not eating for around 3 hours. The diabetic nurseās reaction made me feel like that was high, so I asked if it was normal. The doctor said yes, it was normal ā but the nurse then said no, it was high. The doctor then repeated that it was normal and said we were there about her weight, not that.
Iāve come away feeling really unsettled and honestly a bit dismissed. Now I feel like Iāve got a new worry on my mind, and Iām not sure what to think or do next (I have already contacted our GP for a follow-up).
Has anyone experienced anything similar with their child? Or had slightly raised blood sugars and what happened next? Iād really appreciate any advice or reassurance ā¤ļø

For reassurance, I wouldnāt be worried about the blood sugars being 7.3.
If you have concerns about diabetes because she has symptoms then definitely worth investigating with a blood test (HB1ac) which will give you a better idea of her glucose levels over a long period rather than a one off finger prick test

I donāt have any advice on that but what is your daughters weight if you donāt mind sharing? My daughter is very little Iāve shared concerns with the health visitor and they just say as long as she eats sheās fine but Iām just wondering your daughters weight if I should bring this up to them again in case thereās something underlying x

For the diabetes aspect, 7.3 is not bad. They say those without diabetes have a range of between 4 and 6. As a Type 1 diabetic myself, as her sugars were 7.3 after not eating for a few hours, take it as a concern if she also shows the following - tired all the time, more thirsty than usual, losing weight rapidly and going toilet more. Im sure you know this already as you say there's a strong family history too š
