Did anyone else’s epidural not work?

Writing retrospectively here. I had a epidural with my 1st baby in 2025 and it pretty much had no effect, I was in absolute agony the whole time (hours). Anyone else experience this?

Midwife now says this isn’t normal and I shouldn’t have been in pain.
Due my 2nd in 6 weeks and debating weather I should go for one again. 😣

Yes! Only they tried mine 3 times over my 28hr labour and none of them worked!!

No idea if it’s the same sort of thing as anaesthesia but if you maybe have red hair? I’ve heard about anaesthesia not working on red heads? Xxxx

Mine didn’t work and when I told the midwife it was too much she called an got it replaced. The second work like a charm

Sort of.. Mine stopped working halfway through, I stupidly assumed it “only did so much” when it came to pain haha I remember thinking Jesus, imagine how painful this would be without the epidural… 😂 turns out it had just come out 🤦‍♀️

Did anyone check it at the time?

Mine first fell out then had to be replaced. Then stopped working and was told by the anaesthetist that it was because I was sat too upright, once I reclined after about 30 mins it kicked in again

Yes! It did nothing for the pain, it only made my legs go numb so I couldn't move at all. I would never say yes to it again

I’m so sorry that happened to you ❤️ it’s never easy going through something for the first time as it’s impossible to know what’s normal.

Mine worked really well for about 10h and then all of a sudden stopped working altogether. I was taken to theatre and had a spin block for labor.

My docs and midwives seemed surprised that it stopped working though so I don’t think it’s normal … however, based on the poll results, it seems to be more common than I realized.

Good luck with your 2nd x

I had read up on this some time ago.

A small percentage of women do not respond well to the choice of drug used in the epidural. So in that case you may need a different medication in your epidural. If you were able to feel your lower body after the epidural you should let them know immediately so they could correct it, please do not suffer through agony.

Another reason could have also been misplacement, usually due to lack of experience, and the anesthetic was injected it in the wrong place, rendering it ineffective.

Had my second girl 3 days ago. Worked only on one side but the other side hurt. I had too many top ups and felt out of control over my body but the pain was still present.

Yes I had 2 failed epidurals with my first baby, they didn’t take unfortunately no matter how many attempts to try and re position them. My twin sister had the same thing happen so it must run in the family 😂Ended up with a spinal block as I ended up with a forceps delivery xxx

Mine only kicked in when they were stitching me back up. With my second I didn’t have one, it was too late haha but I’m really glad I didn’t. The recovery was much easier. With my first I had horrible back pain following the epidural. I have extremely fast labours though so that makes it easier.

I feel so stuck 😫

I am 36 years old (& yes by now, I should have known better, ik) and I feel like i made the biggest mistake of my life. I got pregnant shortly after meeting my 3rd baby's father. We were together 3 months before finding a house together. Worst mistake ever. He is a very narcissistic, manipulative person who thinks every thing has to be his way or not at all. The first half of our relationship revolved around his stresses (financial and mental) and he literally told me he couldnt focus on the relationship or the pregnancy until he felt like he got better. I had a hard time with that. Our relationship hadnt really even started, we had a kid on the way, & yet we werent working on our relationship and my feelings never seemed to matter because he was going through "worse" things.

Now his mental state has got better for himself at least (now that hes caught up on bills and such), but he still absolutely has zero empathy and consideration for me and my feelings. Has only been to one doctors appt over these past 8 months, never talks about baby or asks, & constantly stresses me out with him accusing me of talking to other guys. He doesn't help around the house at all and the one thing he has bought for baby, I pushed him to do it. Everything else, my family or I have got.

If I try to ignore him and go about my day without issues he'll blow up my phone and cause issues and accuse me of cheating. Like yesterday, I tried dojng something positive for myself throughout this pregnancy, tried having one good memory through it, by going out and doing a little maternity shoot. I never did a maternity shoot with my first two, so this was an entirely new experience for me and I was hoping it would make me feel good at least for one night. He couldnt even let me have that. Kept accusing me of being out on a date all night. He threatened to move all of my stuff out of my room so i didnt know what i was going to come back home to. Meanwhile he can go out EVERY Thursday and have drinks with his coworkers, and go to adult skating with his friends "for his mental health". & I get called crazy & insecure if I question what hes doing.

Im on this lease with him for another year and a half, even if i broke it and moved, I am 8 months pregnant and going on maternity leave soon. & there has been absolutely zero rentals lately in the area I need for my girls school district. He has his two kids on the weekends and can live wherever he pleases because his kids go to school while with their mom. He has less stuff than I do. Yet he refuses to make anything easy on me. He wont move and is constantly starting petty arguments , such as food my kids eat that he buys. They are teens and sometimes sneak food, who didnt at their age? & the food is literally a few dollars.

I just feel so damn stuck and unhappy. Idk what to do anymore 😫 I feel horrible for how much I changed up my kids lives. I was so stable and independent before I met him.

Idk what I expect to get out of this post, but just needed to rant cus I have absolutely zero people to talk to about it.

5 days old

My baby is 5 days today and I’m struggling with sleep. He will only sleep when he is being cuddled, which I’m aware is expected but I need some sleep too.

Any tips for getting him settled in the next to me cot?

I don’t want to co sleep and he is EBF

Leaving baby for naps?!

Okay but are we leaving our babies in the room by themselves during daytime naps and just watching the baby monitor when doing things? It feels so wrong leaving them by themselves because the professional advise is to always be in the same room when baby is sleeping, but then how do you get anything done?

Sleep regression

My 4 month old has been waking up multiple times in the night and I was simply feeding her back to sleep. I was prepared for this but what's turning out more difficult lately is once she's unlatched herself and gone back to sleep, she wakes up again in 15-20 mins. I then need to either feed her again or rock her back to sleep (she vehemently protests the rocking). Just when I think we are ready to get another small stretch of sleep, she wakes up again for a second feed. I'm pretty sure it can't be difficulty connecting sleep cycle the second time round as the gap is so short. What's happening? Has anyone else gone through this?

She slept through the night before this or woke up once for a quick feed. Send help!

Choking on saliva!

So my LO just choked on her saliva twice! But was completely silent why doing so!

I’m just so glad that I was having a night where I can’t sleep and just so happened to be watching her, but I have never been so scared in my life! Is this normal? I now have a fear of going to sleep. She only had her 6-8 week check up today and she’s never done this before.

She’s 7 weeks tomorrow and now I’m panicking she’s going to choke herself in her sleep!

36 weeks sleep!

Hi everyone,

Is anyone else struggling with sleep? Obviously I’m used to waking up every two hours for a wee during pregnancy but the last two nights, I’ve also had achey legs and just feeling so uncomfortable! I also just cannot sleep, even if I do manage to get comfortable! It’s quite triggering for me as I suffered badly with pp insomnia after my first child, so I’m struggling mentally with it. I also have 2 weeks left at work as a teacher and beginning to think I won’t make it that far!
