Redundancy- losing nursery place:’)

So lost. I currently wfh which means I can get the 30 free hours of childcare. I have a. 2 y/o and 8 month old. I’ve just found out I’m most likely being made redundant and I’ve been applying to other remote roles with no luck, and can’t do an in person role because the 8 month old doesn’t have a space till September. Now I’m going to have to pull my 2 y/o out of nursery and I’ll have to cancel both their spaces as there’s a very low chance I’ll be able to get & start a new job in September exactly & won’t have anyone to watch them when I get one till I qualify again as both parents have to earn £800+ a month. It’s a catch 22 situation. I’m so stuck, hurt and lost. Been in the company for 4 years and now my dreams of them both going to nursery, having a good job & going to uni are shattered till my youngest is 5 and i have no idea what to do

Sorry to hear you’re in this situation. I wouldn’t cancel the September nursery place though as you don’t know that you won’t have a role by then. If you do have to remove your 2yo then I would ask for a space to be reserved from September as well.

I think you have a grace period for your 2 year old.

Thank you both, my problem is that I’ve been looking for other remote roles since November with no luck😅 and even to do a hybrid role I’d need to still have both spaces but I’m not sure when I can cancel them by without paying a lot? Especially because I won’t qualify for the funding so I don’t want to be charged for a month without funding

Yeah you’ll be in a grace period. Where have you been looking for a role? What do you do? X

How many days do your children go to nursery/plan to go? Could you try to get a part time job instead?

The grace period says it usually lasts to the next term so that would be September, meaning as long as you had found a new role by then you should continue to qualify..

Check your nursery contract to see how long notice you have to change/cancel your space as then you can find out the latest time you could cancel if you needed.

I’m sorry you have to deal with all this, hope you find something 🩷

Thank you! I currently do B2C emails/phone calls for booking stags/hens etc & doing customer service, been with the company for 4 years but they’re keeping 2/9 staff! They haven’t even officially told me, they held a meeting yesterday for everyone but I’m not working till Thursday!

My 2 year old is going 2 days a week but my 8 month old doesn’t qualify for the funded hours so she doesn’t go yet and she doesn’t start till September, I could try and get a part time job but there’s no one to watch her as my partner works and no family nearby 😅

I’ll contact the nursery but if it is September then that’s incredibly helpful especially as she loves going so much! Thank you
