My husband and I are currently applying for nursery waitlists for our baby’s childcare but I recently got into a conversation with a mum who favoured childminders for her two children. Anyone with first hand experience able to share which option they chose and why? It’s our first child so we have no experience with it other than the fact I’m a teacher (but for secondary).

We chose nursery because the childminders in our area had much longer lists, and as we both work FT we were concerned about the potential of childminder sickness / AL etc impacting continuity of care and us having to do more pick ups and so on, whereas at nursery they have back up staff x

We went with a nursery. To echo the above, I need to know the setting will be open regardless of personal circumstances/staff illness, I work in a school and some childminders take holidays in term time which is less than ideal. I prefer the idea of multiple staff working in the rooms in terms of safeguarding/whistleblowing, I like that the nursery can allow him to be with peers of a similar age rather than a mixed age group provision like a childminder. I also preferred that there are multiple key workers, children naturally form better relationships with some people and not others, so for him to have a few options in terms of his preferred care giver was/is helpful. Multiple staff also meant that they give my barnacle babies more support at nap time than a lone working childminder with multiple babies to put to sleep.
