If milk takes a few days to come in, why did the midwife who visited me the next day after I left the hospital, say that my baby was hungry and losing weight? And tell me to feed my baby formula? It makes me think that this is why my milk never really came in. Because I struggled with breastfeeding, she took formula really well which I think made my milk dry up. So confused.

Your milk doesn’t come in until day 3-5. You have colostrum before that which is enough for babies their tummies are absolutely tiny. They shouldn’t weigh baby until day 5 unless there are serious concerns but certainly not the day after birth. It’s normal for newborns to loose weight before they gain again x

It depends how much weight they have lost and on other factors like jaundice. Some weight loss is normal. Too much weight loss is dangerous.
Before reliable alternatives sources of food like formula were invented, if a mother didn’t produce enough milk their babies could starve to death within weeks of birth.
Unfortunately you’ll never know if the midwife was overly cautious or prevented your baby being very ill. Did she tell you how much weight your baby had lost. Under 10% is fairly normal.
